SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 1: “Golden Nā Leo: Makana Sings Hawaiʻi’s Songs of Romance from the 50s & 60s”
DESCRIPTION:EKK opens Season 2025 on Monday\, February 3 at the OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa in Lihuʻe with a nostalgic and scintillating musical flashback to an earlier time in Hawaiʻi featuring celebrated entertainer\, singer and slack key virtuoso Makana. \nJoin us for an evening of “golden era” sounds as Makana takes us back in time to the heyday of Hawaiʻi’s legendary crooners\, remembering icons like Alfred Apaka\, Don Ho\, Sonny Chillingworth\, Kui Lee\, The Kalima Brothers and more. \nThe atmosphere of mid-century Waikīkī inspires this tribute to a time and place that remains indelibly tattooed on the hearts and minds of people worldwide\, never again to be experienced. \nMakana shares about his inspiration and process reanimating these vintage styles and sounds: \n“Modernity often feels as though we are being swept into a homogenized future leaving behind our rich and varied cultural past\, yet we value timeless cultural practices\, traditional folk arts\, and cherished memories of a simpler time. I was watching old videos of my kumu\, Uncle Sonny\, and realized his unique slack key sound was partly attributed to a specific guitar – a 1964 Chet Atkins 6120. So\, I went searching\, found one\, and had it restored. The sound is incredible and just like Sonny’s! Hearing it inspired me to go back through my LPs and fall in love once again with songs and sounds from those early days of highly melodic Hapa Haole classics- some sappy\, some truly classy and others downright comical. The levity spoke to me; some innocence lost. Listening to live recordings of these legends brought tears to my eyes. I’m diving into arrangements in slack key and other modes to reanimate favorite mele and exploring my baritone and falsetto deeper. It feels like I’m unearthing all these varied personalities; like acting\, in a fashion. I’m having a blast\, and I’m excited to share these treasures from our past. There’s really almost nowhere in Hawaiʻi one can go to hear the older styles. Virtually everyone has moved on. But I’ve always felt these classic musical contributions deserve our eternal enjoyment and celebration. And they speak to our not-so-distant history\, and in that I feel there is much to be learned in terms of envisioning where we are heading and where we may want to adjust course. As Hawaiʻi homogenizes more toward any modern capitalist society\, what sense of place are we maintaining? Many transplants moved here with the vision portrayed in this old music. Now it’s gone\, and so is the vision\, which means those visions are often replaced by those offered up by corporations and institutions. We all have different orientations; perhaps this particular aesthetic still has great value to offer our diverse community. Simply\, remembering a time when singing\, laughing\, socializing and appreciating beauty were core to our appreciation for being in Hawai’i.” \nMakana believes in honoring those who came before. Makana shares about his inspiration and process reanimating these vintage styles and sounds: \n“As Hawaiian music has “streamlined” with economic influences like the massive hula market in Japan\, much of the musicianship and varied influences have quietly atrophied. Much attention has been given to the renaissance artists of the 70s- Gabby\, Genoa\, Sons of Hawaiʻi\, Mākaha Sons\, Calimero’s\, Peter Moon\, Hui ʻOhana\, Beamers — but not so much from the previous eras. However\, the music from all those eras was intimately influenced by American styles. The crooners of mid-century paved a glorious path of melody\, rhythm and harmony that perfectly encapsulated the aesthetic of the era prior to the folk/ rock explosion of the late 60s. Those entertainers and their magical environs swept locals and visitors alike into a dreamworld of myth\, romance and music- a curious blend of crooning\, lounge\, exotica\, Hawaiian traditions\, Broadway\, Latin jazz and American pop. Songs from this era celebrate the amalgamation of cultures and lifestyles like no other\, like time capsules to a time when Hawaiʻi was truly the romance capital of the world!” \nAttendees are encouraged to dress “period-appropriate” with Hawaiʻi-inspired fashion from the 50s\, 60s and even 70s. To get into the proper mood of the music of an earlier time\, we invite the audience to come dressed in their best “retro” attire from yesteryear; arrive your fashionable best with Japanese silk “ka-be” shirts\, vintage muʻumuʻu\, elegant coifs and whatever else might transport you back to those days of magical music from the bygone golden era of romance celebrated in Hawaiian song. \nInstead of the ʻUkulele Circle\, join us in a Waikiki Welcome! \n#### \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \n#### \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! We value and care for our guests and what better way to enjoy the OUTRIGGER Way with an overnight stay. On behalf of EKK and OUTRIGGER Kauai Beach Resort & Spa\, here is a link to our special rates\, as this season is a busy one\, we recommend booking your reservations promptly. \nEKK Series Booking Link \n#### \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1. DESCRIPTION:The Polish Ambassador\nHawaii Island Tour 2025 – TICKETS HERE \nShow Date\nSaturday February 8th\, 2025 \nThe Polish Ambassador\nMusician. Producer. Beatsmith. Recording artist. Composer. Dance-floor general. Label-head. A mystery man of many hats\, The Polish Ambassador rocks more than just a trademark jumpsuit\, authoring sublime\, intentional artistic works\, animated safaris in technicolor sound. At first breath\, The Polish Ambassador was an experiment\, David Sugalski’s sound-art passion project that came to life. Today\, TPA is among the premier EDM/live crossover artists in the country with millions of listeners around the world; he’s consistently in-demand at the live music-focused gatherings and boutique electronic festivals from coast to coast. Founder of independent label Jumpsuit Records\, an environmentalist and early progenitor of the permaculture action movement\, the world’s funkiest diplomat is here to party with a purpose. \nSince 2006\, The Polish Ambassador has consistently released critically-acclaimed full-length albums on Jumpsuit Records\, alongside a dizzying number of side-projects and multi-form collaborations. All the while launching the careers of a diverse smattering of artists that run the gamut in geography and genre. He is one-half of the celebrated folktronica project Wildlight\, a duo in which he pairs with ethereal songstress Ayla Nereo. \nThe Polish Ambassador’s prolific output incorporates many styles\, from exuberant global-house to fatback mid-tempo funk\, you’ll pick up on West African percussion alongside stirring Kirtan melodies\, a psychedelic sax solo or a fresh verse from a Brooklyn female emcee. TPA employs live horns\, keyboards\, guitars\, violins\, and a bevy of talented instrumentalists on stage. “The Jumpsuited One” has headlined iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison\, Colorado\, and the renowned counter-culture gathering Oregon Country Fair. Suwannee Hulaween\, Electric Forest\, Envision Festival\, and Lightning in a Bottle and other national festivals have each repeatedly invited TPA back across different years. \nIn alignment with TPA’s artistic ethos is a low-key lifestyle that places a premium on being present\, living in harmony with nature\, participating in community and inspiring it to thrive. Offstage\, David Sugalski instigated a village-building convergence in his hometown in Northern California\, and manages his own 25-acre homestead in the picture-Esque\, rolling Sierra Nevada foothills. The farmer/carpenter lives modestly in a cabin he built on his land of the lush; TPA music is created in a solar-powered recording studio on the property. When he removes the famed bright blue-and-yellow 80’s jumpsuit and reverts back to his humanoid self\, Sugalski is an avid solo bicyclist who enjoys venturing up California’s breathtaking coastal Highway 1; he’s a dedicated van-adventurer\, having built out an exquisite tiny home inside a contractors van. \nSugalski plans his TPA tours for minimum carbon footprint\, he advocates for healthy-beverage alternatives at music venues. Jumpsuit Records has donated tens of thousands of dollars to various non-profit organizations and charities; a portion of the label split goes to supporting non-profits voted on by fans. TPA’s awareness-in-action coalesces with numerous non-profit endeavors\, including Jumpsuit Records\, own 501(c) certified organization ActionDays.us. TPA decided to eliminate the merchandise from his business model\, in order to facilitate a fan-operated buy-and-sell marketplace. The Polish Ambassador has evolved exponentially\, from an art project to a vibration; a joyful community that thrives on the dancefloor and finds freedom\, connection\, and collective oneness through this music. \nConcerts with a Cause\nAnaina Hou Community Park is excited to continue our Concerts with a Cause Mission Driven Music offerings with The Polish Ambassador! SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 3: Jamminʻ with the Masters – Ledward Kaapana\, Jeff Peterson\, Bobby Ingano & David Kamakahi
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 3\, February 17 – Jamminʻ with the Masters – Ledward Kaapana\, Jeff Peterson\, Bobby Ingano & David Kamakahi \nThe fortunate few who get to sit backstage or in the garage while master musicians have fun sharing their joy of music in informal kanikapila-style experience a very special scene.  Four master musicians at the top of their game will welcome you into their special space where they talk music to each other\, challenge each other\, inspire each other with their unique styles and artistry. “Without the burden of audience expectations and while sharing within the safe haven of a musical ʻohana\, artists love to play the music that wells out of a deeper place of sharing and camaraderie.” \nLed Kaapana thrills and inspires audiences worldwide with his unmatched virtuosity in kihoʻalu\, ʻukulele\, and leo kie kie\, and he throws in an unexpected joke if he is so moved. His devoted fans from many corners of the world call themselves “LedHeads” and often show up wherever Led performs. Expect the unexpected with Led as every performance is spontaneous and fresh. He often jokes\, “I no rehearse!” He thrills audiences and when the audience thrills him\, he lets out his inimitable Ledward giggle. \nInspired and mentored by Led\, David Kamakahi has honed his craft as one of the outstanding ʻukulele players of this generation. He toured extensively with his father\, the late Reverand Dennis Kamakahi\, composer extraordinaire\, and now plays with the group Waipuna along with Kale Hannahs and Matt Sproat. We are fortunate to be able to have him share his ʻukulele virtuosity on Kauaʻi between two tours to Japan. Jamminʻ with such a revered circle of artists\, David is sure to “cut loose”! \nBobby Ingano\, undoubtedly THE master steel guitar artist in Hawaiʻi\, spends much time on tour with Taj Mahal\, but values any time he can spend time playing music on Kauaʻi. A lead artist in the Steel Guitar festivals staged on all the islands\, Bobby WOWʻs the audience when he “Sleepwalks” and plays any of his mesmerizing steel solos. Humble and quiet\, his music speaks volumes as kolohe Bobby adds delightful paʻani and unexpected steel sounds to enhance the music by other artists. Born in Lanai City\, Lanai\, Bobby credits his teachers for his musical guidance – grandparents\, aunts\, uncles and Feet Rogers. \nJeff Peterson is undoubtedly a master musician at the top of his game\, comfortable with audiences worldwide in a variety of musical genres. Peterson’s style fuses traditional Slack Key with elements of classical and jazz guitar. Born on the Island of Maui\, Jeff grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father\, a paniolo\, or Hawaiian cowboy\, on the Haleakala Ranch. The music that he heard from his father and other paniolos as well as the slack key on classic recordings by the Gabby Pahinui Band\, Leonard Kwan\, and Sonny Chillingworth made a deep and lasting impression on him that he continues to draw inspiration from today. He went on to study jazz and classical guitar at the University of Southern California and at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa; today he is one of the most sought after artists in Hawaiʻi. \nPurchase tickets at:  http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1. SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 4: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders”. Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff”
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 4\, February 24:  “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders” (Paul Ventura\, Pancho Graham\, Norman Kaawa Solomon\, Kilipaki Vaughan). Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff” \nBorn in the fishing village of Miloliʻi on Hawaiʻi Island on May 29\, 1937\, Charlotte Apo grew up in a close-knit community where singing and playing Hawaiian songs was a basic lifestyle. Charlotte attended Kamehameha Schools from 1952 to 1955.  She worked for Hawaiian Airlines playing music and also played music with Aunty Genoa Keawe. Music was a major part of her life. \nIn 2011\, at the age of 74\, Charlotte was clinically diagnosed with Alzheimerʻs. Her short-term memory is nearly non-existent\, but music and long-term memories related to music are fortunately intact. As long as she is prompted with her song titles\, Charlotte can draw from her encyclopedic memory banks of traditional Hawaiian songs and accompanies herself with her zesty ʻukulele strumming. Does she get tired?  Not when she is accompanied by the Mokihana Serenaders\, a dynamite ensemble of Kauaʻi musicians including Pancho Graham on upright bass\, Kilipaki Vaughan on steel guitar\, and Norman Kaʻawa Solomon and Paul Ventura\, Charlotteʻs son\, on guitar. \nAdding to the fun and action for the evening\, kupuna are invited to get up and “strut their stuff” when they are so moved.  It will be hard to keep the kupuna in their chairs with such rousing Hawaiian music. \nCharlotte and the Mokihana Serenaders are embarking on a new “career” playing on the set for the upcoming movie\, “Hawaiian Vacation” which will be released\, hopefully\, soon. \nʻUkulele Hour: Beverly Kauanui \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series!
