SUMMARY:Talk Story Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Monica Chung and Jonathan Korth will perform a four-hand concert on two pianos one night only. \nMonica Chung is a concert pianist\, producer\, music director\, and educator. She gave her solo debut with the North Carolina Piedmont Triad Symphony Orchestra at age 10 as a result of winning 1st prize in the Competition. She has appeared as soloist with orchestras in London\, Hungary\, New York\, and St. Petersburg in Russia under the baton of the late Sviatoslav Luther.\n\nAn active chamber musician and soloist\, she has participated in festivals around the world including: Banff Chamber Music Festival; International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove\, England; Puigcerda International Music Festival in Spain; Ecoles d’Art Americaines de Fontainebleau in France; Tel-Hai International Masterclasses in Israel; Leipzig International Music Festival; International Keyboard Institute Festival; Beethoven Institute and Festival. Monica is founder of the series A Night of Chamber Music with Ensemble Henrietta. She is a frequent guest artist of the Hawaii International Music Festival\, and subs in the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra.\n\nAs music director\, Monica particularly enjoyed Hawaiʻi Childrenʻs Theatre After Dark alumni production of the controversial show Spring Awakening\, Kauai Community Players production of Sweeney Todd\, Kauai Performing Arts Center Nice Work If You Can Get It\, and Hogfish Productions new opera CarmXn. She is indebted to her teachers Pavlina Dokovska\, Alexander Slobodyanik\, Vladimir Feltsman\, Olegna Fuschi\, and Eric Larsen. Monica has served on piano faculty at the historical NYC landmark Greenwich House Music School\, and Bergen Academy of Music & Art. She is Music Lecturer at Kauai Community College\, and maintains a private studio of pianists and composers. She is the Director for the Kauai Concert Association\, and is enjoying her term as President of the Hawaiʻi Music Teachers Association.\n\nPianist Jonathan Korth\, enjoys a multifaceted career as a soloist\, chamber musician\, collaborator\, and teacher. Hailed by the Des Moines Register as having “prodigious technique and keen sense of musicianship\,” Dr Korth’s sizable presence piques the audience’s attention and delivers with the satisfyingly deep and colorful sound he has become known for. Dr. Korth is a prolific concertizer\, with performances not only in Bangkok\, Beijing\, Brussels\, London\, Shanghai\, Seoul\, and Tokyo\, but also in prized stateside venues like Carnegie Hall’s Weill Hall. With the advent of the pandemic\, he’s reimagined his live performances and played/co-produced regular online concerts from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Music Department where he’s been a piano faculty member since 2008.\n\nDr. Korth’s deep appreciation and love for chamber music has led to recent partnerships with musicians such as violinists Martin Beaver and Robert McDuffie\, and cellists Zuill Bailey and Sung-Won Yang. Known as a brilliant collaborator\, Dr. Korth also regularly plays with the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra and finds frequent chamber music partners with many orchestral musicians. He has performed on concert series such as Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert Series\, Honolulu Chamber Music Society\, Chamber Music Hawaii\, Maui Arts and Cultural Center\, Hawai’i Concert Society\, and the Austin Chamber Music Festival.\n\n“Jonathan Korth pushes the boundaries of the piano” (Arts Hawai’i) looking for new sound fields and techniques outside the mainstream repertoire. An advocate for the compositions of his UH colleagues Thomas Osborne\, Donald Reid Womack\, and Takuma Itoh\, he welcomes working with composers and has premiered dozens of new works.\nIt is easy to see how his enthusiasm for advancing the profession has made Dr. Korth highly sought after for master classes throughout Asia and has attracted a diverse international studio. With his encouragement\, musical influence\, and guidance\, many of his students have founded successful professional piano careers\, pursued graduate degrees at top piano programs\, and won top prizes at competitions.\n\nDr. Korth grew up in Forest City\, Iowa and is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory (BM) where he studied with Ann Schein and Boris Slutsky and Stony Brook University (MM and DMA)\, where he was a student of Gilbert Kalish. An avid supporter of increasing access to excellent classical music\, he is the current president of the Honolulu Chamber Music Series. Grateful to have made his home in Honolulu\, Jon enjoys hiking and fine dining\, two of the most well-paired activities.
