SUMMARY:Kaua‘i Songwriters Music Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Kauai Songwriters Music Festival is a celebration of the art of songwriting. This year’s festival includes workshops for songwriters on Friday and Saturday followed by an evening concert on Saturday open to the public. Tickets to the concert are $35 in advance. The workshops are $80 and include a concert ticket. https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/ec6566a0-e92f-425d-8a10-528316334d56 \nFunded with support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Plan and the County of Kauai and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. \nPerformers and Presenters Include: \nJason Blume is the author of 6 Steps to Songwriting Success\, This Business of Songwriting\, and Inside Songwriting (Billboard Books). His songs have been recorded by Britney Spears\, the Backstreet Boys\, the Oak Ridge Boys and many others\, selling more than 50\,000\,000 copies. His song\, “Come Back” was the debut single for Na Hoku Hanohano award winning band “Crossing Rain.” \nJason’s songs have been included in films and TV shows including “Scrubs\,” “Friday Night Lights\,” “Assassination Games\,” Disney’s “Kim Possible” “Dangerous Minds\,” “Kickin’ it Old Skool\,” “The Guiding Light\,” “The Miss America Pageant\,” and many more. He studied film and television composing at U.C.L.A.\, and contributed songs and background score for Emmy-winning and Emmy nominated TV shows. A guest lecturer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney) and at the Berklee School of Music\, he teaches the BMI Songwriter Workshops and has taught master classes in more than ten countries. He has published more than 125 articles in BMI’s magazines\, and has been interviewed as a songwriting expert for CNN\, NPR\, the BBC\, Rolling Stone\, and the New York Times. \nEmily Elbert builds her home in between worlds. In music\, she connects disparate concepts: traversing wide-ranging styles\, expressing both the contemplative and celebratory\, and fusing the Earthly with the ethereal. She’s honed her artistry on the road\, playing over a thousand independent solo shows from Peru to Palestine – but she has also become a sought-after collaborator\, playing in the bands of luminary artists including Leon Bridges\, Jacob Collier\, Esperanza Spalding\, Sara Bareilles\, Lorde\, and Jenny Lewis. All of these experiences feed into her music today. Anchored by what L.A. Weekly calls a “funky\, engrossing groove\,” the publication notes\, “Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing\, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist\, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” \nEmily recently released her sixth independent album\, Woven Together\, a rhythmic\, flowing ode to the intersections of sensuality\, healing and progress. Upon its release\, PopMatters remarked\, “though it would be safe to call her a spiritual successor to Joni Mitchell\, Elbert is truly a chameleonic composer…this is Emily Elbert\, a name to bookmark.” \nSongwriter Ken Emerson and special guests will be featured. Ken Emerson is one of the world’s most highly regarded traditional Hawaiian slack key & steel guitarists living today. He is a monster player of both\, and he switches easily between them during his performances\, laying his guitar on his lap and picking up a steel bar for an instrumental interlude. Emerson is famous for his one-of-a-kind slack/steel style playing of vintage acoustic steel-bodied National Resonator guitars. Emerson won the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and was a featured artist and composer on the first-ever National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy Award-winning Best Hawaiian Album. Emerson’s playing was also featured on Donald Fagen’s (Steely Dan) Grammy Award-winning Morph the Cat. He has many additional touring/recording credits including Jackson Brown\, Boz Scaggs\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Taj Mahal\, Todd Rundgren\, Ramblin” Jack Elliott\, and Elvin Bishop. \nRock Hendricks is a world-renowned saxophonist\, producer\, and recording engineer. Throughout his career\, Rock performed and recorded with many legendary performers such as Michael Jackson\, John Lee Hooker\, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood\, The Funkadelics\, Michael Buble\, Marvin Gaye Jr.\, Marvin Gaye Jr. III\, The Temptations\, Bobby Womack\, Coke Escovedo\, Walter Becker and Don Fagan\, Steve Arrington\, The Family Stone\, Bonnie Raitt\, Leon Russel\, Dave Mason\, Sammy Hagar\, Motown Records\, Gabriel Hasselbach\, Jeff Lorber\, and Paul Hardcastle. \nRock wrote and produced music for the Electronic Arts game “The Sims” with over 150 million games sold. \nRock has recorded over 30 songs with Paul Hardcastle and has had nine Billboard #1 smooth jazz hits. Rock is playing sax with Paul on yet another upcoming album to be released at the end of 2023. \nAllan Thomas is a longtime singer songwriter\, guitarist\, recording artist\, performer\, record producer and engineer. He has released seven albums of original material and is currently working on his 8th release. Mr Thomas receives airplay from his various releases worldwide. \nAllan has been writing songs since a late teen in 1967. He released his first album of original material for Sire Records in 1971. AT was a staff-songwriter for ABC Music in Los Angeles in the late 1980’s. \nMr Thomas has recorded and performed with Cannonball Adderley Quintet\, Graham Nash\, David Crosby and Donald Fagen among others. He has opened shows for Weather Report\, Taj Mahal and Richie Havens among others. \nSome of Allan’s current recording band members include: Keith Carlock drums (Steely Dan)\, Jimmy Johnson bass (James Taylor)\, Russell Ferrante piano (Yellowjackets) Will Kennedy drums (Yellowjackets) Dean Parks guitar (Steely Dan) and Michael Landau guitar (Miles Davis). \nRandy Tico is known to many for his bass work with a diverse range of artists such as the critically acclaimed jazz nonet Matrix\, Jeff Bridges\, Strunz & Farah\, Airto & Flora Purim\, Jose Feliciano\, Kenny Loggins and John McEuen. \nBut to a whole other world he has established himself as an award winning composer/sound designer for theater with Critical Mass Performance Group\, Denver Center of the Performing Arts\, Portland Center Stage\, Theater @ Boston Court and Ensemble Theater Company in his home town of Santa Barbara. \nEclectico brings these worlds together with a heartfelt journey through sonic landscapes sometimes uplifting\, other times bittersweet but always rich with emotion and gorgeous instrumental performances. Drawing from award winning theater scores\, soundtracks and new compositions Eclectico is Tico’s first release since Earth Dance on Higher Octave in 1990. .

SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 1: “Golden Nā Leo: Makana Sings Hawaiʻi’s Songs of Romance from the 50s & 60s”
DESCRIPTION:EKK opens Season 2025 on Monday\, February 3 at the OUTRIGGER Kauaʻi Beach Resort & Spa in Lihuʻe with a nostalgic and scintillating musical flashback to an earlier time in Hawaiʻi featuring celebrated entertainer\, singer and slack key virtuoso Makana. \nJoin us for an evening of “golden era” sounds as Makana takes us back in time to the heyday of Hawaiʻi’s legendary crooners\, remembering icons like Alfred Apaka\, Don Ho\, Sonny Chillingworth\, Kui Lee\, The Kalima Brothers and more. \nThe atmosphere of mid-century Waikīkī inspires this tribute to a time and place that remains indelibly tattooed on the hearts and minds of people worldwide\, never again to be experienced. \nMakana shares about his inspiration and process reanimating these vintage styles and sounds: \n“Modernity often feels as though we are being swept into a homogenized future leaving behind our rich and varied cultural past\, yet we value timeless cultural practices\, traditional folk arts\, and cherished memories of a simpler time. I was watching old videos of my kumu\, Uncle Sonny\, and realized his unique slack key sound was partly attributed to a specific guitar – a 1964 Chet Atkins 6120. So\, I went searching\, found one\, and had it restored. The sound is incredible and just like Sonny’s! Hearing it inspired me to go back through my LPs and fall in love once again with songs and sounds from those early days of highly melodic Hapa Haole classics- some sappy\, some truly classy and others downright comical. The levity spoke to me; some innocence lost. Listening to live recordings of these legends brought tears to my eyes. I’m diving into arrangements in slack key and other modes to reanimate favorite mele and exploring my baritone and falsetto deeper. It feels like I’m unearthing all these varied personalities; like acting\, in a fashion. I’m having a blast\, and I’m excited to share these treasures from our past. There’s really almost nowhere in Hawaiʻi one can go to hear the older styles. Virtually everyone has moved on. But I’ve always felt these classic musical contributions deserve our eternal enjoyment and celebration. And they speak to our not-so-distant history\, and in that I feel there is much to be learned in terms of envisioning where we are heading and where we may want to adjust course. As Hawaiʻi homogenizes more toward any modern capitalist society\, what sense of place are we maintaining? Many transplants moved here with the vision portrayed in this old music. Now it’s gone\, and so is the vision\, which means those visions are often replaced by those offered up by corporations and institutions. We all have different orientations; perhaps this particular aesthetic still has great value to offer our diverse community. Simply\, remembering a time when singing\, laughing\, socializing and appreciating beauty were core to our appreciation for being in Hawai’i.” \nMakana believes in honoring those who came before. Makana shares about his inspiration and process reanimating these vintage styles and sounds: \n“As Hawaiian music has “streamlined” with economic influences like the massive hula market in Japan\, much of the musicianship and varied influences have quietly atrophied. Much attention has been given to the renaissance artists of the 70s- Gabby\, Genoa\, Sons of Hawaiʻi\, Mākaha Sons\, Calimero’s\, Peter Moon\, Hui ʻOhana\, Beamers — but not so much from the previous eras. However\, the music from all those eras was intimately influenced by American styles. The crooners of mid-century paved a glorious path of melody\, rhythm and harmony that perfectly encapsulated the aesthetic of the era prior to the folk/ rock explosion of the late 60s. Those entertainers and their magical environs swept locals and visitors alike into a dreamworld of myth\, romance and music- a curious blend of crooning\, lounge\, exotica\, Hawaiian traditions\, Broadway\, Latin jazz and American pop. Songs from this era celebrate the amalgamation of cultures and lifestyles like no other\, like time capsules to a time when Hawaiʻi was truly the romance capital of the world!” \nAttendees are encouraged to dress “period-appropriate” with Hawaiʻi-inspired fashion from the 50s\, 60s and even 70s. To get into the proper mood of the music of an earlier time\, we invite the audience to come dressed in their best “retro” attire from yesteryear; arrive your fashionable best with Japanese silk “ka-be” shirts\, vintage muʻumuʻu\, elegant coifs and whatever else might transport you back to those days of magical music from the bygone golden era of romance celebrated in Hawaiian song. \nInstead of the ʻUkulele Circle\, join us in a Waikiki Welcome! \n#### \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \n#### \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! SUMMARY:JAKE SHIMABUKURO
DESCRIPTION:Show Date\nSaturday\, February 15th\, 2025 \nJake Shimabukuro – TICKETS HERE\nSince gaining prominence in the early 2000’s\, ukulele marvel Jake Shimabukuro has mesmerized audiences with his innovative and dynamic style\, taking the instrument to dizzying new heights. Over a dozen solo albums\, Shimabukuro has shown a knack for moving effortlessly between genres\, sometimes in the same song. After being taught the instrument by his mother at age four\, Jake became a local phenom\, performing on his own and in a local group Pure Heart. Early in his solo career he became a YouTube sensation when his cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral. Since then\, Jake has gone on to play the world’s most venerable venues\, from The Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House and The N.O. Jazz Fests and collaborated with some of the world’s greatest musicians\, including Yo-Yo Ma\, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones\, Jimmy Buffett\, Jack Johnson\, Bette Midler\, Ziggy Marley\, Sonny Landreth\, Billy Strings\, Lukas & Willie Nelson and Warren Haynes. Shimabukuro has also won his share of awards and\, just a few years ago he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts. \nOne strong thread that runs through much of Shimabukuro’s work is that of collaboration. From the Trio album to Jake & Friends to Grateful and beyond\, Shimabukuro thrives in the ability to feed off and inspire his fellow musicians. For his brand-new project Blues Experience\, Shimabukuro joins forces with his friend\, drumming legend and founding member of Fleetwood Mac\, Mick Fleetwood\, to create a fresh new take on the Blues. “I’ve always wanted to do a Blues album and when Mick and I started talking about working together\, I thought who better to work with than Mick Fleetwood?” The result is something exhilarating and unique\, as these two titans of their instruments reinterpret some of the greatest songs written by some of their favorite songwriters in a Blues setting. \nIt’s a union whose roots go back to the late 1990s when a young Shimabukuro met and played with Fleetwood at the Hawaiian Music Awards ceremony along with singer songwriter Kenny Loggins. It wasn’t until a few years ago\, that the two were reconnected by a mutual friend at a Fleetwood Mac reunion concert in Nashville. That night\, the seeds of the collaboration were planted at Fleetwood’s suggestion. Not long thereafter the two convened along with Jake’s touring bassist Jackson Waldhoff and keyboard player Michael Grande to start work on a new studio album in Maui. Mark Johnstone from The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band plays keys on two songs\, “Need Your Love So Bad”\, and “Rockin’ In The Free World”. \nOver the course of two 3-day sessions\, the band recorded 9 songs live in the studio. The only track that was not recorded with all of the musicians playing together was Sonny Landreth’s brilliant slide guitar on the Jeff Beck/Stevie Wonder classic “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers”. This soaring track full of peaks and valleys was a tremendous way to start the album. The interplay between Landreth and Shimabukuro is so seamless\, you’d never know that they did not play together in the same room. The Chemistry is due in large part to the two performing the song w ww.sarapetite.com | http://www.fortybelowrecords.com together during a recent tour. In addition\, Sonny would often sit in with Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band back when Jake was a member. \nUp next is a truly unique interpretation of the Blues standard\, “Rollin’ N Tumblin’”. The song fades in with a swirling\, delay-drenched psychedelic uke over top of Fleetwood’s tribal drumming pattern\, giving credence to why Jake is often referred to as the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele”. Then\, on a dime\, Jake changes his sound and cuts to playing the song’s theme which is echoed nicely by the Hammond Organ. \nJake’s playing on the track is experimental and otherworldly\, at times ascending into a psych jazz rock fusion in the most visceral ways. “Mick’s energy when he plays is so infectious. He’s such an intense musician. He pushes everyone around him and it’s so inspiring to see his facial expressions and watch his movements and the way he hits the drums\,” says Shimabukuro exuberantly. \nAbout “Kula Blues” Jake explains\, “I’d never written anything that sounded this bluesy or a shuffle\, so I wanted to take a stab at it and have a song where any musician could sit in without needing a chart”. Again\, Jake credits Mick Fleetwood with bringing the track to life. “He just got behind the drums and without even counting it off came charging in. You either jump on the train or get outta the way!” \nA couple of other standouts on the album are “Whiter Shade of Pale” and “Rockin’ in the Free World”. Of the former\, Shimabukuro recalls “I was so in the moment\, I remember just closing my eyes and really forgetting my pedal board and everything and just reacting to Mick and the band.” \nFortuitously\, The Bridge School Benefit\, founded by Neil Young had asked Jake if he would do a cover of “Rockin’ in the Free World” and the same week he and Mick were in the studio. The track has an explosive energy that builds to an incendiary psychedelic guitar\, ‘er make that ukulele solo spurred on by Fleetwood’s thunderous drums. \nOne of the things that really comes across speaking to Jake about this record is the ‘spirits in the air’ during the recordings. This is particularly apparent on their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird”. Recorded not long after Christine McVie’s passing\, the band only did one take. You can feel the emotion in the performance. “I remember Mick took a moment of silence after the song ended and you could see that he felt Christine’s presence.” Fleetwood’s tom tom groove provides the heartbeat for Shimabukuro’s floaty\, ethereal uke\, as he moves naturally between fast strumming chords and lilting melodic phrases. “I felt so fortunate to be able to experience that with Mick. It was very powerful to see the effect it had on him.” \nAnother ‘ghost in the machine’ or ‘happy accident’ was the sound of the drums leaking into the ukulele’s electric pickup. Because the musicians were so close together\, you can hear all the drums on the ukulele track. When the fx are going on the uke\, you get this cool subtle layer of the drum fx in the mix\, contributing to the overall vibe and cohesion of the record. Not long after the completion of the record\, Maui was devastated by historic wildfires. At the benefit concert in Honolulu Fleetwood once again joined Shimabukuro and the band to perform the songs on Blues Experience for the first time. Before the performance\, Fleetwood gave a powerful and inspirational speech to the community. Shimabukuro expands on this\, \, “Mick’s like the point guard on a basketball team making everyone around him play better. It’s really incredible. He has such a huge presence\, charisma and energy. It was such an honor to do this project together. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nThis is a tiered ticketing level show. \nVIP Pavilion Seating includes access to the front row of seats in the pavilion. His devoted fans from many corners of the world call themselves “LedHeads” and often show up wherever Led performs. Expect the unexpected with Led as every performance is spontaneous and fresh. He often jokes\, “I no rehearse!” He thrills audiences and when the audience thrills him\, he lets out his inimitable Ledward giggle. \nInspired and mentored by Led\, David Kamakahi has honed his craft as one of the outstanding ʻukulele players of this generation. SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 4: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders”. Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff”
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 4\, February 24: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders” (Paul Ventura\, Pancho Graham\, Norman Kaawa Solomon\, Kilipaki Vaughan). Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff” \nBorn in the fishing village of Miloliʻi on Hawaiʻi Island on May 29\, 1937\, Charlotte Apo grew up in a close-knit community where singing and playing Hawaiian songs was a basic lifestyle. Charlotte attended Kamehameha Schools from 1952 to 1955. She worked for Hawaiian Airlines playing music and also played music with Aunty Genoa Keawe. Music was a major part of her life. \nIn 2011\, at the age of 74\, Charlotte was clinically diagnosed with Alzheimerʻs. Her short-term memory is nearly non-existent\, but music and long-term memories related to music are fortunately intact. As long as she is prompted with her song titles\, Charlotte can draw from her encyclopedic memory banks of traditional Hawaiian songs and accompanies herself with her zesty ʻukulele strumming. Does she get tired? Not when she is accompanied by the Mokihana Serenaders\, a dynamite ensemble of Kauaʻi musicians including Pancho Graham on upright bass\, Kilipaki Vaughan on steel guitar\, and Norman Kaʻawa Solomon and Paul Ventura\, Charlotteʻs son\, on guitar. \nAdding to the fun and action for the evening\, kupuna are invited to get up and “strut their stuff” when they are so moved. It will be hard to keep the kupuna in their chairs with such rousing Hawaiian music. \nCharlotte and the Mokihana Serenaders are embarking on a new “career” playing on the set for the upcoming movie\, “Hawaiian Vacation” which will be released\, hopefully\, soon. \nʻUkulele Hour: Beverly Kauanui \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! For sixteen years now\, E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui has been dedicated to this mission. Each year\, kumu hula and kupuna from throughout Hawai`i are invited to pass on their teachings to eager participants. These dedicated individuals are steadfast in ensuring that the art of hula will be perpetuated with great love and respect for the culture and its people. Each is highly reputable in hula training\, education\, experiences\, language and history and is inspired to share the spiritual essence of hula. They have been invited to participate in this retreat as a means of preserving and promoting Hawai`i’s cultural dance in a non-competitive and nurturing environment. This devotion to excellence from nā kumu hula\, na kupuna and various other Hawaiian cultural specialists\, shall provide each student with an opportunity to broaden their training\, thinking and understanding of hula in its entirety on both an individual and hālau level. SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 8: “A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String” featuring Raiatea Helm and an Ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s Top Musicians
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \n Week 8\, March 24: Raiatea Helm presents: A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String\, Volume One — Raiatea Helm and an Ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s Top Musicians \nJoin us for an extraordinary evening that unites the past and present in a heartfelt celebration of Hawaiʻi’s enduring legacy. Raiatea Helm will present an unforgettable evening showcasing her critically acclaimed album\, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String\, a tribute to the troubadours of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nAccompanied by an ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s finest musicians – Ian OʻSullivan\, Duane Padilla\, Scott Robert Villiger\, CaseyAlan Olsen\, and Kapono Lopes — Raiatea breathes new life into these timeless compositions\, honoring the composers and storytellers who shaped Hawaiʻi’s rich musical history. \nRaiatea is one of the last keepers of traditional Hawaiian music\, setting the standard to ensure the quality and authenticity of this cherished art form are preserved and honored. Through her interpretations\, she carries forward the legacy of these mele\, bringing to life the voices and stories of a once-flourishing nation. \nBorn on Oʻahu\, raised on Molokaʻi\, and deeply connected to Hanapēpē\, Kauaʻi\, where her mother is a native\, two-time Grammy nominee and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Raiatea Helm is known for her clear leo kiʻekiʻe (high voice) and her mastery of leo haʻihaʻi —a uniquely Hawaiian vocal style where the intentional breaking of the voice reflects the deep emotions embedded in the poetry of folk songs. These songs speak of love\, longing\, and connection to people and places. \nAs Raiatea prepares for the next installment\, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String: Volume 2\, this performance offers a glimpse into her ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate the music of the Hawaiian Kingdom. \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! SUMMARY:Kalani Pe’a with special guests Coppin Colburn Trio
DESCRIPTION:Kalani Pe’a\nwith special guests Coppin Colburn Trio \nShow Date\nSaturday May 17\, 2025 \nKalani Pe’a\nKalani Peʻa sings everything from classical\, musical\, ballads\, R&B\, soul to traditional and original Hawaiian music\, displaying his wide-ranging talents as a songwriter and music composer. His talent for lyrics and Hawaiian language fluency is on display in his original Hawaiian songs alongside his affectionate bilingual arrangements of R&B favorites. \nIt started at age four when Peʻa was diagnosed with a speech impediment — his mother introduced him to singing and music to help him pronounce his words. His father comes from a musical family and both parents encouraged him to take vocal lessons and choir –by age 8\, Peʻa was winning numerous talent competitions\, and went on to win in men’s classical and musical divisions while receiving his degree from Colorado Mesa Univ. \nHis debut album brought him to Dave Tucciarone\, a 13-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-Winning Engineer and Producer in Honolulu\, leading to the 2017 Grammy® win and first Na Hoku Award. This successful collaboration continued with Kalani’s second CD\, No ‘Ane‘i [We Belong Here] and 3rd CD Kau Ka Pe‘a\, earning him Grammy Awards\, and featuring him in 2022 Grammy Opening Premiere Concert. Kau Ka Pe‘a also won him 2 Nā Hōkū awards\, including the honor of Male Vocalist of the Year. He now boasts a remarkable 4 for 4\, winning his 4th Grammy for his 4th release Kuini. \nThe first Hawaiian singer to be part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook\, Kalani returned to New York in 2024\, for Carnegie Hall’s Musical Explorers program\, selling out eight shows for students as well as two family matinees. A fluent Hawaiian speaker\, Peʻa started his career as an educator\, publishing five Hawaiian language children’s stories. He taught at Kamehameha Schools in Kona and Maui\, teaching Hawaiian culture (science focus)\, and creating curriculum. In 2021\, his song E Na Kini was featured on the Netflix release Finding ‘Ohana and he was also selected as a featured artist for Spotify and Amazon Music campaigns during AAPI (Asian-American Pacific Islander) month\, gracing billboards on over 120 transit shelters in New York and San Francisco. Following his first Grammy win\, he was honored by the Hawai‘i State House of Representatives with an official proclamation: “It is vital that Native Hawaiian culture and the arts be perpetuated for future generations: Kalani Pe’a is a torchbearer and we recognize his accolades\, accomplishments\, and continued work on behalf of Native Hawaiians.” \nSelf-described as “Hawaiian contemporary soul”\, Kalani’s dynamic and charming stage presence\, vocal brilliance\, and range of songs from Hawaiian to R&B has brought him to the forefront of Hawaiian music for both traditionalists and a new generation. Adding a Christmas show to his repertoire\, Kalani Pe‘a’s Hawaiian Christmas is a celebration of the warmth and special “aloha” of the Holiday Season\, sharing much-loved songs from both western and Hawaiian roots. \nConcerts with a Cause\nAnaina Hou Community Park is excited to continue our Concerts with a Cause Mission Driven Music offerings with Kalani Pe’ar! His many additional touring/recording credits include Jackson Browne\, Boz Scaggs\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Taj Mahal\, Todd Rundgren\, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot\, and Elvin Bishop. \nEli Smart creates music coined “Aloha Soul”—a style that fuses the spirit of Hawaii with the grit of British soul music. SUMMARY:Pōhaku Ka Pāpale – Giant Community Workday at Alakoko
DESCRIPTION:Mālama Hulē‘ia is hosting another huge community event\, Pōhaku Ka Pāpale (To Set the Capstone) on October 18 at Alakoko fishpond\, continuing their multi-year effort to restore the Hulēʻia watershed and stabilize the fishpond’s kuapā (rock wall). The event follows the unforgettable 2023 gathering\, E Kū Ana Ka Paia (The Wall Will Stand)\, when an extraordinary wave of community members from across the pae ʻāina came together to set stones and breathe new life into the fishpond. This year’s event also coincides with Mālama Hulē‘ia’s tenth anniversary\, marking a decade of cultural and ecological restoration. \nThe October 18 workday will once again unite Hawaiian fishpond specialists\, kūpuna\, key partners\, trained staff\, and alakaʻi (guides) to lead community members of all skill levels in rebuilding and capping a section of the 2\,700-foot wall. Participants will experience the ancient Hawaiian practice of stonework—passing\, selecting\, and setting pōhaku side by side—while others join in a native planting activity to further restore the surrounding ecosystem. \nThis event’s registration is limited. Please sign up here to secure your spot.
