SUMMARY:Princeville Moʻolelo: “The Quest Toward Conservation of Kauaʻi’s Honu” with Mālama i nā Honu
DESCRIPTION:The Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue on Tuesday\, August 11th as we welcome Dr. Lisa Harrington and Dora Samson\, representatives of Mālama i nā Honu. As an indigenous species in Hawai‘i\, sea turtles play an important role in Hawaiian cultural traditions and mo‘olelo. Honu (green turtles) and honu‘ea (hawksbill turtles) are mentioned in the fourth verse of the Kumulipo\, the Hawaiian creation chant\, and some families continue to revere sea turtles as their ‘aumākua\, or spiritual guardian. \nTraditionally\, sea turtles were incorporated into native practices\, religious ceremonies and diet. Shells\, bones and oil were used to make fishhooks\, tools\, medicine and jewelry. Harvest was tightly regulated by traditional management practices of the kapu system (cultural rules\, code of conduct) enacted by Chiefs or Ali‘i. Historically\, honu were abundant and nested throughout the entire Hawaiian Archipelago. However\, after European colonization the kapu prohibition broke down and\, by the 20th century\, harvesting had become commercialized\, causing the honu’s numbers to fall precipitously. \nToday\, the honu is listed as a “Threatened Species\,” under the Federal Endangered Species Act. Since receiving protection in 1978\, they have made a marvelous comeback. Their protection while peacefully basking on the beach and spreading the word to the public of the continuing need for preservation efforts on their behalf is the mission of Mālama i nā honu. \nMālama i nā Honu has expanded its volunteer and education program to the Island of Kauaʻi at Poʻipu Beach. Honu Guardian volunteers are on the beach every day of the year to offer educational outreach about this protected species. This helps avoid intentional and inadvertent harassment and assures the honu’s peaceful coexistence with humans on our beaches. \nOur free talk story event will be held on Tuesday\, August 11\, 2026\, from 5:00 to 6:30pm in the Princeville Community Center. SUMMARY:Free film screening: Voices Behind Barbed Wire
DESCRIPTION:This year marks 80 years since Honouliuli Internment Camp was closed and as part of this year’s commemoration Honouliuli National Historic Site is hosting a free film screening of a local documentary\, Voices Behind Barbed Wire\, that was made about Japanese American incarceration in Hawai’i.  There were four such incarceration sites on Kaua’i and people from Kaua’i were held at Honouliuli.  The film screening will be followed by a panel session featuring the director and park superintendent.  It will be at the Kaua’i Community College’s Performing Arts Center and starts at 4pm and ends at 5:30pm.  \nAdditionally\, the Lihue public library which will be hosting a pop-up exhibit about the camp for the entire month of July.

SUMMARY:Southside Music & Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:The annual Southside Music and Arts Festival celebrates the cultural diversity of Kauai with a night full of fantastic art\, live music\, and creativity on Kauai’s South Side.  \nOn Saturday\, June 20th Old Koloa Town will come to life with over 50 local artists\, food trucks\, and 4 bands. We invite you to dance the night away to live music\, or wander beneath the towering trees and discover art installations and interactive booths. Grab some excellent dinner or snacks\, and complete the night with shopping at local artisans booths. There’s something for everyone at the 3rd annual Southside Music and Arts Festival.  \nThe festival begins with live music and vendors in Waikomo Courtyard\, before moving across the street towards the Sugar Monument. Here you’ll find the festival main stage\, art installations\, and more artists and vendors. Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged for attendees.  \nThis family friendly festival is free to attend\, thanks to our sponsors Old Koloa Town and Fish Eye Gallery.  \nThe Southside Music and Arts festival is produced by the non profit Southside Arts Initiative.
