SUMMARY:VIRTUOSO JAZZ – Inspirations Ensemble from Canada
DESCRIPTION:The originality of the InSpirations ensemble finds its essence in the subtle assembly of acoustic instruments around the organ\, thus offering a palette of infinitely varied colors. At the heart of Impressions\, the organ becomes a unifying and versatile instrument\, capable of unusual sound textures in synergy with the quartet’s interventions. The immense variety of organ timbres provides an ideal canvas for improvising saxophones and clarinets\, trombones\, percussion\, and double bass.  Impressions is the culmination of stylistic research initiated by each member of the group who\, in concert\, stage original compositions and adaptations of repertoire works. Witness an era rich in cultural convergences and artistic crossbreeding\, the Inspirations Ensemble. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Maryland State Boychoir – 2024 Hawaii Tour
DESCRIPTION:(A free event.  Donations accepted to support the Boy Choir’s Tour Fund.) \nThe Maryland State Boychoir was founded in 1987 with fourteen boys and a vision: to create an organization that would offer talented boys from diverse backgrounds a foundation in choral singing and a discipline that develops the mind\, builds character\, and sustains the spirit. Over the past 36 years\, the choir has built and enjoyed a strong reputation throughout the state and the nation. The Maryland State Boychoir performs over 100 times each season and on national and international tours that have taken them to over forty states and fifteen countries.  \n  \nThe MSB performs a wide body of choral literature that ranges from Gregorian chant to contemporary choral music. Deeply rooted in the ancient Boychoir tradition\, the MSB holds concerts and events each year reflecting this tradition including the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols\, Choral Evensong\, Compline\, and concerts featuring masterworks composers who themselves were once choirboys. Its annual performance series features the Annual African American Celebration Concert and the Baltimore Boychoir Festival. \n  \nThe Maryland State Boychoir frequently collaborates with other ensembles and has participated in performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony\, Mahler’s Third Symphony\, The Nutcracker by Pyotor Ilyich Tchaikovsky\, Tosca by Giacomo Puccini\, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff\, Hodie by Ralph Vaughan Williams\, Fauré’s Requiem\, Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish” by Leonard Bernstein\, The Fellowship of the Ring by Howard Shore\, and The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner. \n  \nThe Maryland State Boychoir has self-produced seven recordings and appears on the Albany Label in a performance of Andrew Earle Simpson’s A Crown of Stars\, as well as a recording on the Naxos label of Symphony No. 3 “Kaddish” by Leonard Bernstein with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestra Marin Alsop. The MSB has been an invited choir for regional and national ACDA\, NAfME\, and American Guild of Organists conferences. The Maryland State Boychoir’s recordings have been featured on classical radio stations throughout the country. \n  \nThe Maryland State Boychoir proudly continues the great Boychoir tradition as Maryland’s official “Goodwill Ambassadors\,” a title bestowed upon them by the late governor of Maryland\, William Donald Schaefer.

DESCRIPTION:“Empty the Shelters” at Kauai Humane Society\nA Reduced Adoption Fee Event by BISSELL Pet Foundation💚 \nFrom October 1st – 15th\, 2024\, the Kaua’i Humane Society will be participating in BISSELL Pet Foundation “Empty The Shelters” reduced fee adoption event for a second time this year. This partnership with BISSELL makes it possible to adopt a dog or cat from our shelter for only $25. \nBut wait – there’s more! We will also be waiving adoption fees for all of our senior animals\, making adopting a senior pet in October completely free and easy! \nIt’s easier than to find your forever friend while helping us Empty the Shelters with: \n💲 $25 adoptions for ALL Adoptable Dogs and Adoptable Cats \n🌟 FULLY SPONSORED Adoptions for Senior Animals (7+) \n🏡 FULLY SPONSORED Adoptions for Longest Stay Animals (90+ days in shelter) \n😸😸 2-for-1 Adoption Fees for all puppies and kittens at $25 (under 6 months) \nWe think Bissell is just amazing for including over 410 organizations from 43 states in this event dedicated to ending pet homelessness. Check out this great quote from BISSELL founder Cathy Bissell: \n“Our nation’s animal shelters are facing a capacity crisis and need your help now. Adoptions have slowed while a surge in owner surrenders due to families facing economic and housing challenges has left tens of thousands of highly adoptable pets desperate to find homes\,” said Cathy Bissell\, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation. \n“Our Spring National ‘Empty the Shelters’ will support the adoption of thousands of pets across the country\, helping shelters in this critical time. Opening your home to a shelter pet saves a life and creates lifesaving space to help another pet in need.” \nThanks to Bissell Pet Foundation\, Sponsors\, and Donors for making this possible! Let’s make adoptions more accessible and find loving homes for all!💙💚 \n📌 Event Details: \nDate: October 1st – 15th\, 2024\nTime: 12 pm – 4:30 pm (Adoption Hours\, Closed Thursdays)\nLocation: Kauai Humane Society

SUMMARY:Princeville Moʻolelo Free Lecture Series: “Finding Home\, a Hawaiian Petrel’s Journey”
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue on Tuesday\, October 15\, 2024. Join artist/author Caren Loebel-Fried for the launch of her new book\, “Finding Home\, A Hawaiian Petrel’s Journey\,” published by University of Hawai‘i Press. Caren will share the behind-the-scenes of this inspiring story. Her adventures researching the endangered ‘ua‘u (Hawaiian petrel) brought her to their colonies throughout the Hawaiian Islands and to Nihokū\, within Kīlauea Point NWR\, where Pacific Rim Conservation (PRC) and partners have undertaken an ambitious project to save these seabirds. Special guest speakers include André Raine (Archipelago Research & Conservation) and Robby Kohley (PRC) whose work with the ‘ua‘u inspired this story. \n‘Ua‘u are endemic Hawaiian seabirds that soar huge distances day and night\, powered by wind. They are guided by smell and an inner magnetic map\, and only touch land once a year when they meet their life mate at their burrow and together raise one chick. For 60 million years\, ‘ua‘u have made a living off the ocean\, nesting in Hawai‘i far from predators. Hawaiian legends tell of seabirds darkening the sky as they returned from the sea\, their guano washing down from the mountaintops\, nourishing the land and offshore coral reefs. But\, since the arrival of humans\, ‘ua‘u numbers have plummeted to near extinction. “Finding Home\, a Hawaiian Petrel’s Journey” is based on the true story of these amazing seabirds and the people working to save them. \nFree Lecture Series: Tuesday\, October 15\, 2024 at 5pm in the Princeville Community Center. The presentation will also be available via Zoom. For more information\, visit http://www.kauairefuges.org/princeville-moolelo. \nAbout the Series: Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges is pleased to partner with the Princeville at Hanalei Community Association Events Committee to present this engaging series. Together\, they are presenting free informative “talk story” events monthly in the Princeville Community Center to share the work and stories of conservation partners\, Hawaiian cultural practitioners and more. \nAbout Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges: Kīlauea Point Natural History Association\, doing business as “Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges\,” serves as a 501(c)(3) non-profit Friends Group that supports the wildlife conservation\, education\, and historic preservation work of the Kauaʻi National Wildlife Refuge Complex\, which includes Kīlauea Point\, Hanalei and Hulēʻia NWRs.  With donations\, plus proceeds from Nature Store operations\, the organization supports visitor education\, provides rehabilitative care for sick or injured native Hawaiian birds\, volunteer training\, special events\, equipment for wildlife habitat maintenance and restoration\, free bussing for school field trips to a refuge\, awards annual scholarships for college students pursuing environmental studies and more.
