SUMMARY:Kaua‘i Songwriters Music Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Kauai Songwriters Music Festival is a celebration of the art of songwriting. This year’s festival includes workshops for songwriters on Friday and Saturday followed by an evening concert on Saturday open to the public. Tickets to the concert are $35 in advance. The workshops are $80 and include a concert ticket.  https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/ec6566a0-e92f-425d-8a10-528316334d56 \nFunded with support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Plan and the County of Kauai and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. \nPerformers and Presenters Include: \nJason Blume is the author of 6 Steps to Songwriting Success\, This Business of Songwriting\, and Inside Songwriting (Billboard Books). His songs have been recorded by Britney Spears\, the Backstreet Boys\, the Oak Ridge Boys and many others\, selling more than 50\,000\,000 copies. His song\, “Come Back” was the debut single for Na Hoku Hanohano award winning band “Crossing Rain.” \nJason’s songs have been included in films and TV shows including “Scrubs\,” “Friday Night Lights\,” “Assassination Games\,” Disney’s “Kim Possible” “Dangerous Minds\,” “Kickin’ it Old Skool\,” “The Guiding Light\,” “The Miss America Pageant\,” and many more. He studied film and television composing at U.C.L.A.\, and contributed songs and background score for Emmy-winning and Emmy nominated TV shows. A guest lecturer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney) and at the Berklee School of Music\, he teaches the BMI Songwriter Workshops and has taught master classes in more than ten countries. He has published more than 125 articles in BMI’s magazines\, and has been interviewed as a songwriting expert for CNN\, NPR\, the BBC\, Rolling Stone\, and the New York Times. \nEmily Elbert builds her home in between worlds. In music\, she connects disparate concepts: traversing wide-ranging styles\, expressing both the contemplative and celebratory\, and fusing the Earthly with the ethereal. She’s honed her artistry on the road\, playing over a thousand independent solo shows from Peru to Palestine – but she has also become a sought-after collaborator\, playing in the bands of luminary artists including Leon Bridges\, Jacob Collier\, Esperanza Spalding\, Sara Bareilles\, Lorde\, and Jenny Lewis. All of these experiences feed into her music today. Anchored by what L.A. Weekly calls a “funky\, engrossing groove\,” the publication notes\, “Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing\, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist\, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” \nEmily recently released her sixth independent album\, Woven Together\, a rhythmic\, flowing ode to the intersections of sensuality\, healing and progress. Upon its release\, PopMatters remarked\, “though it would be safe to call her a spiritual successor to Joni Mitchell\, Elbert is truly a chameleonic composer…this is Emily Elbert\, a name to bookmark.” \nSongwriter Ken Emerson and special guests will be featured. Ken Emerson is one of the world’s most highly regarded traditional Hawaiian slack key & steel guitarists living today. He is a monster player of both\, and he switches easily between them during his performances\, laying his guitar on his lap and picking up a steel bar for an instrumental interlude. Emerson is famous for his one-of-a-kind slack/steel style playing of vintage acoustic steel-bodied National Resonator guitars. Emerson won the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and was a featured artist and composer on the first-ever National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy Award-winning Best Hawaiian Album. Emerson’s playing was also featured on Donald Fagen’s (Steely Dan) Grammy Award-winning Morph the Cat. He has many additional touring/recording credits including Jackson Brown\, Boz Scaggs\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Taj Mahal\,      Todd Rundgren\, Ramblin” Jack Elliott\, and Elvin Bishop. \nRock Hendricks is a world-renowned saxophonist\, producer\, and recording engineer. Throughout his career\, Rock performed and recorded with many legendary performers such as Michael Jackson\, John Lee Hooker\, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood\, The Funkadelics\, Michael Buble\, Marvin Gaye Jr.\, Marvin Gaye Jr. III\, The Temptations\, Bobby Womack\, Coke Escovedo\, Walter Becker and Don Fagan\, Steve Arrington\, The Family Stone\, Bonnie Raitt\, Leon Russel\, Dave Mason\, Sammy Hagar\, Motown Records\, Gabriel Hasselbach\, Jeff Lorber\, and Paul Hardcastle. \nRock wrote and produced music for the Electronic Arts game “The Sims” with over 150 million games sold. \nRock has recorded over 30 songs with Paul Hardcastle and has had nine Billboard #1 smooth jazz hits.  Rock is playing sax with Paul on yet another upcoming album to be released at the end of 2023. \nAllan Thomas is a longtime singer songwriter\, guitarist\, recording artist\, performer\, record producer and engineer. He has released seven albums of original material and is currently working on his 8th release. Mr Thomas receives airplay from his various releases worldwide. \nAllan has been writing songs since a late teen in 1967. He released his first album of original material for Sire Records in 1971. AT was a staff-songwriter for ABC Music in Los Angeles in the late 1980’s. \nMr Thomas has recorded and performed with Cannonball Adderley Quintet\, Graham Nash\,  David Crosby and Donald Fagen among others. He has opened shows for Weather Report\, Taj Mahal and Richie Havens among others. \nSome of Allan’s current recording band members include: Keith Carlock drums (Steely Dan)\, Jimmy Johnson bass (James Taylor)\, Russell Ferrante piano (Yellowjackets) Will Kennedy drums (Yellowjackets) Dean Parks guitar (Steely Dan) and Michael Landau guitar (Miles Davis). \nRandy Tico is known to many for his bass work with a diverse range of artists such as the critically acclaimed jazz nonet Matrix\, Jeff Bridges\, Strunz & Farah\, Airto & Flora Purim\, Jose Feliciano\, Kenny Loggins and John McEuen. \nBut to a whole other world he has established himself as an  award winning composer/sound designer for theater with Critical Mass Performance Group\, Denver Center of the Performing Arts\, Portland Center Stage\, Theater @ Boston Court and Ensemble Theater Company in his home town of Santa Barbara. \nEclectico brings these worlds together with a heartfelt journey through sonic landscapes sometimes uplifting\, other times bittersweet but always rich with emotion and gorgeous instrumental performances. Drawing from award winning theater scores\, soundtracks  and new compositions Eclectico is Tico’s first release since Earth Dance on Higher Octave in 1990. .

SUMMARY:VIRTUOSO JAZZ – Inspirations Ensemble from Canada
DESCRIPTION:The originality of the InSpirations ensemble finds its essence in the subtle assembly of acoustic instruments around the organ\, thus offering a palette of infinitely varied colors. At the heart of Impressions\, the organ becomes a unifying and versatile instrument\, capable of unusual sound textures in synergy with the quartet’s interventions. The immense variety of organ timbres provides an ideal canvas for improvising saxophones and clarinets\, trombones\, percussion\, and double bass.  Impressions is the culmination of stylistic research initiated by each member of the group who\, in concert\, stage original compositions and adaptations of repertoire works. Witness an era rich in cultural convergences and artistic crossbreeding\, the Inspirations Ensemble. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dirty Cello Makes Porter Pavilion Debut
DESCRIPTION:Dirty Cello Makes Porter Pavilion Debut\nFrom Iceland to Italy\, and all over the U.S.\, San Francisco based band Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues\, rock\, and Americana. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist\, Rebecca Roudman\, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. From down home blues and rock with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin’ Americana\, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping! \n“Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky\, carnival\, romantic\, sexy\, tangled\, electric\, fiercely rhythmic\, and textured\, and only occasionally classical.” Oakland Magazine \n“The band plays every style imaginable\, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing—it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart\, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist.” Good Times Santa Cruz \n“A five-piece string ensemble that truly pushes the envelope and breaks the barriers\, they blend blues\, bluegrass and world music sounds with roots in the world of European classical music in a style that is unique and refreshing.” Cloverdale Reveille \n“The group seamlessly careens from blues to bluegrass and rock in a way that really shouldn’t make sense but somehow does.” LA Times \n“The ensemble plays a range of eclectic tunes in ways you won’t hear anyone else dare to attempt.” – Argus Courier \n“Anyone who’s been in an audience when the San Francisco Bay Area Dirty Cello takes the stage knows that something unique happens whenever cellist Rebecca Roudman and ensemble come face to face with living\, breathing (and whooping and shouting) fans.” \n\nStrings Magazine\n\n“Dirty Cello have been hard to describe\, apart from saying that a cello (played in ways you won’t quite believe) is involved\, and the range of music takes the word eclectic and supercharges it to meltdown levels of energy and invention.” – Argus Courier \nSOCIAL MEDIA: \nfacebook.com/dirtycellomusic\ninstagram.com/dirtycello\ntwitter.com/dirtycello\nDirtycello.com \nShow Date\nSeptember\, 21\, 2024 \nTickets – Available Here!\nAll tickets subject to tax and fees\nGA Tickets $35 advance \nDay of Show Tickets $45 if available. \nShow Details\nDoors: 5:30pm\nMusic: 6:30pm

SUMMARY:Eli Smart – No Summer
DESCRIPTION:Eli Smart Releases No Summer to Kauai with support from Jordan Paul\nShow Date\nSaturday\, October 19 \nShow Details\n5:30 PM: Doors Open\n6:30 PM: Music \nTimes subject to change. Any changes will be confirmed via email closer to the show date * Stay updated on our Instagram @anainahou! \nEli Smart\nIn 1999\, Elijah Kai Solomon Smart was born into the City of Angels\, Sprawl and Smog. In order for Eli to grow-up surrounded by nature\, unburdened by major city modernity; Mom & Dad hauled ass to Hawaii when he was 5. With the van packed sitting on the drive\, they took one last look at their soon-to-be old house\, when a willowy man walked by playing the flute: it was Beck. \nThe Smarts settled-in on a farm on the island of Kaua’i. What happened there was magical: nature claimed its course. Under unfathomably starry skies\, the farm grew avocados. The parents grew musicians. They bought a shop from a woman who made yarn and opened Hanalei Strings; a store that sold stringed instruments and vinyl records. They built a stage in the shop (it’s still there today) and those that performed on it had been taught guitar\, ukulele or lap steel by Eli’s dad. Eli’s Mom performed with the local Hula dancers. Gigs for fundraisers\, gigs for birthdays\, gigs with mates. The community supported the music and the music supported the community. \nEli’s nan (who had built the farm they now lived on) didn’t need guitar lessons\, from anyone. She was a member of The Ace of Cups\, a trailblazing all-girl 1960s rock group who Hendrix publicly adored. Evenings on the farm ended with an after dinner jam. Three generations of musicians in harmony beneath a gobsmacking celestial canopy. Sounds idillic. \nAll of which begs the question: Why did he leave? \nThe search for answers to that question are central to Eli’s debut album: No Summer. If you’re expecting ‘Pop Surf Hits Vol. 1’ you’ve come to the wrong place: the album has a much more universal appeal. It’s as much of a travelogue as it is a long-player; on ‘Another Sundown’ and ‘How Come?’ and album close ‘Overdrive’ the emotional longing is palpable\, unhurried and given the space to deep-breathe itself back to the present. The whole album is intricately layered: there are muted drum machines\, subtle harmonies and guitar parts that appear like early morning birdsong. It sounds like nature\, interrupted. \nNo Summer is\, without question\, a psychedelic soul album; one that shares a sun-kissed poignancy with Shuggie Otis’ landmark Inspirational Information. Eli Smart is an exceptionally gifted and expressive guitarist too. It’s hard to decide if the instrument was his closest travel companion or itself a cognitive mode of transport. Such is his command of it\, changes in mood and dynamics can happen in a heartbeat. When this happens on the album\, the songs most faithfully represent the riotous stage shows which have captivated audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. Eli’s live band is staffed exclusively by good mates in good spirits: a recipe they followed for the album’s creation. The majority of the album was recorded with James Kerr in the Lewisham flat they shared together this year. Yet the songwriting spans a decade and the rude health of youth is writ large over ‘Highschool Steady\,’ ‘Jackie’ and ‘No Destination’ – all songs in the Key of Heyday. The low-slung funk of ‘Moka’ wouldn’t sound out of place if it was offered to us by that willowy passer-by. \nOver the course of the album’s 14 tracks\, No Summer captures a sepia-toned image of formative experiences: it’s a postcard from a well spent youth. It’s less ‘innocence lost’ and more ‘gained perspective.’ The questions it asks are kind. The melodies stick around long enough to become good mates. It’s gloriously low-fi\, DIY and made with friendship at its beating heart. You can take the boy out of Hawaii\, but you can’t take the Hawaii out of the man. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nTickets – Here!\nAll tickets subject to tax and fees\nGA Tickets $20.00\nDay of Show Tickets $30 if Available \nShow Details and Venue Rules\nThis show is all ages. In 2019\, DANCE\, an album of quintets with Grammy award winning guitarist Jason Vieaux\, was enthusiastically received. In 2021\, the Escher’s recording of the complete quartets of Charles Ives and Samuel Barber was met with equal excitement\, including “A fascinating snapshot of American quartets\, with a recording that is brilliantly detailed\, this is a first-rate release all around” (Strad Magazine). SUMMARY:FOGHAT
DESCRIPTION:FOGHAT – SONIC MOJO\nShow Date\nSaturday\, November\, 9th\, 2024 \nShow Details\n5:30 PM: Doors Open\n6:30 PM: Music \nTimes subject to change. Any changes will be confirmed via email closer to the show date \n“Drivin’ Wheel” “Stone Blue” “Slow Ride” “Honey Hush”\n“Fool for the City” “Home in My Hand” “Road Fever”\n“Third Time Lucky” “Terraplane Blues” “Drivin’ On \nFoghat: Boogie Kings for Over Five Decades\nIn 2024\, Foghat celebrates 53 years of rock ‘n’ roll history. This legendary band released their latest album\, Sonic Mojo\, in November 2023\, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts and as of June 2024\, the album had remained on the charts for 27 weeks. Known for their infectious boogie rock\, Foghat continues to captivate audiences\, delivering high-energy performances that are just as thrilling today as they were in 1977 when their classic multi-platinum album\, Foghat Live\, broke them worldwide. \nFoghat’s timeless appeal spans generations. Their concerts attract Baby Boomers\, Gen X’ers\, Millennials\, and younger fans alike. Whether discovered through the video game Guitar Hero III\, the movie Dazed & Confused\, or the inclusion of “Slow Ride” in Top Gun/Maverick (2023)\, fans unite under the band’s electric energy and boogie-inducing music. \nSonic Mojo and Recent Acclaim\nFoghat’s new album\, Sonic Mojo\, has been met with widespread critical acclaim. The album showcases Bryan Bassett’s slide guitar mastery\, earning praise for its blend of blues\, rock\, and country influences. Critics highlight tracks like “She’s A Little Bit of Everything\,” “Mean Woman Blues\,” and “Drivin’ On” for their dynamic energy and exemplary guitar work (ROCK AND BLUES MUSE) (Blues Rock Review) (100% ROCK MAGAZINE) (Front Row Report). \nRock and Blues Muse commended the band’s ability to infuse new life into classic tracks while maintaining their authentic sound. Blues Rock Review rated the album 9/10\, emphasizing Bassett’s slide guitar as a standout element. 100% Rock Magazine noted the band’s seamless blend of influences and praised the precision of the guitar work. Front Row Report described Sonic Mojo as a fun and engaging album\, perfect for road trips\, and lauded it as one of the strongest records in Foghat’s extensive career. \nIn addition to Bryan Bassett’s remarkable contributions\, the reviews also highlight the stellar performances of other band members. Roger Earl’s drumming is described as dynamic and driving\, anchoring the band’s powerful rhythm section. Scott Holt’s vocals and guitar work have been praised for their energy and compatibility with the band’s classic sound. Rodney O’Quinn’s bass lines provide a solid foundation\, contributing to the album’s overall groove and feel. \nA Legacy of Music\nFoghat’s journey began in 1971 when Lonesome Dave Peverett and Roger Earl left Savoy Brown to start their own band. In 1975\, they released Fool for the City\, an album that included the hit song “Slow Ride.” This track became a huge success and is still one of the band’s most recognizable songs. The success of “Slow Ride” was followed by 1977’s Foghat Live\, a multi-platinum album that solidified their place on the worldwide music map. Over the years\, Foghat has earned eight Gold Records\, one Platinum Record\, and one Double Platinum record. Despite the inevitable ups and downs\, including the loss of beloved members Lonesome Dave (2000)\, Rod Price (2005)\, and Craig MacGregor (2018)\, the band has persevered\, driven by their love of music. \nCurrent Lineup and Enduring Spirit\nThe 2024 lineup includes founding member Roger Earl on drums\, long-time member Bryan Bassett (formerly of Molly Hatchet and Wild Cherry) on lead and slide guitar\, Rodney O’Quinn (Pat Travers Band) on bass and vocals\, and newest member Scott Holt (Buddy Guy) on lead vocals and guitar. Holt\, who previously played with Foghat side project Earl & the Agitators\, seamlessly fits into the band’s dynamic\, contributing to their ongoing legacy. \nScott Holt brings a wealth of experience and energy to Foghat. Before joining the band\, he spent ten years as the guitarist for blues legend Buddy Guy. Holt’s powerful vocals and guitar work have been described as a perfect fit for Foghat\, adding a fresh yet familiar sound to the band’s repertoire. His previous work with Earl & the Agitators provided a natural transition into Foghat\, where he continues to impress both fans and critics alike. \nRodney O’Quinn joined Foghat in 2015\, bringing his extensive background from playing with the Pat Travers Band. O’Quinn’s solid bass lines and backing vocals have been instrumental in maintaining the band’s rhythm and energy. His contributions to Sonic Mojo have been particularly noted for adding depth and groove to the band’s sound\, ensuring that Foghat’s music remains as compelling as ever. \nThe Legacy Continues\nFoghat’s success isn’t just a result of their iconic hit “Slow Ride” but a testament to their ability to continually produce great music. Sonic Mojo marks their first #1 record\, proving that the band’s boogie magic is timeless. Roger Earl\, the driving force behind Foghat\, has no plans to stop\, ensuring that this legendary band will roll ‘til they’re old and rock ‘til they drop. \nFoghat’s enduring appeal\, dynamic performances\, and dedication to their craft ensure that they remain a beloved fixture in the rock ‘n’ roll world\, continuing to create and share their music with fans old and new. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nTickets – Available Here!\nAll tickets subject to tax and fees\nGA Tickets $60.00\nDay of Show Tickets $70 if Available \nShow Details and Venue Rules\nThis show is all ages. SUMMARY:Island Breeze Concert 2024
DESCRIPTION:Island Breeze Concert Features Shakuhachi Grand Master Riley Lee\, Taiko Drum Master Kenny Endo and Slack Key Guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson in Concert \n  \nAbout Island Breeze \n  \nMusic Lovers are in for a rare treat as three masters of their crafts on three very different instruments join forces in their Island Breeze concert. Shakuhachi grandmaster Dr. Riley Lee\, taiko drum master Kenny Endo and slack-key guitar virtuoso Jeff Peterson linked up during a week-long residency in Honolulu in 2012. Each conducted intensive workshops and sought to skillfully blend their individual styles to create an inspired sound distinctive to the Hawaiian Islands.  They presented their concert at the University of Hawaiʻi Orvis Auditorium. In 2014\, the trio recorded “Island Breeze”\, nominated in 2015 for Na Hoku Hanohano awards – Hawaiʻi’s version of the Grammys – for Album of the Year and Instrumental Song of the Year. \n  \nAbout the Artists \nRiley Lee has been playing the shakuhachi – bamboo flute – for over half a century. In 1975\, he became the first non-Japanese to be honored with the rank of Dai Shihan (grand master). \nLee\, a frequent visitor to the islands is known for providing ethereal music for the Lawaʻi International Centerʻs Pilgrimage of Compassion among the 88 Buddhist shrines in Lawaʻi Valley. \nHe has introduced the shakuhachi to diverse world-wide audiences as a soloist\, with other performers\, and through his teachings. He earned BA and MA degrees in music from the University of Hawaiʻi and a PhD degree from the University of Sydney\, Australia. \nLee has released more than 70 albums since his first LP in 1980. His latest three solo albums are entirely of the music of the 12th Century mystic\, Hildegard von Bingen. \nKenny Endo is at the vanguard of the taiko genre\, continuing to explore new possibilities for this ancient Japanese instrument. A performer\, composer\, and teacher\, Endo is a consummate artist\, blending taiko with original music through collaborations with artists from around the world. \nIn 2022\, Endo toured across the USA\, performing concerts\, conducting workshops\, and lecturing. He recently received the Honpa Hongwanji Living Treasures of Hawaiʻi Award\, and in January 2022\, was awarded the United States Artists award. \nJeff Peterson was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father\, a paniolo\, or Hawaiian cowboy\, on Haleakala Ranch on the island of Maui. Winner of 14 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards\, including “Haleakala”\, a collaboration with Riley Lee\, Jeff is at the heart of the Hawaiian music scene and is recognized as one of Hawaiʻi’s most versatile musicians. \nHis passion for the guitar has allowed him to shine as a solo artist and has given him the opportunity to collaborate with a wide variety of artists from Hawaiʻi\, across the US\, and abroad. His focus on slack key guitar\, classical\, and jazz music has allowed him to develop a unique and transcendent voice on the guitar while being deeply rooted in the traditions of his Hawaiian heritage. \nOn Sunday\, November 30\, the Island Breeze concert will take place from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM\, with doors opening at 5:00 PM at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center in Puhi. Tickets are $50 general admission\, $30 for senior citizens age 65+ and $15 for students.  Itʻs open seating for all tickets. Tickets are available online at ISLANDBREEZECONCERT.EVENTBRITE.COM or may be purchased at the box office on the night of the performance. \n  \nThe concert is sponsored by the Garden Island Arts Council with assistance from Taiko Kauai.  For more information\, email giac05@icloud.com; or phone (808) 635-3039.
