SUMMARY:Free film screening: Voices Behind Barbed Wire
DESCRIPTION:This year marks 80 years since Honouliuli Internment Camp was closed and as part of this year’s commemoration Honouliuli National Historic Site is hosting a free film screening of a local documentary\, Voices Behind Barbed Wire\, that was made about Japanese American incarceration in Hawai’i.  There were four such incarceration sites on Kaua’i and people from Kaua’i were held at Honouliuli.  The film screening will be followed by a panel session featuring the director and park superintendent.  It will be at the Kaua’i Community College’s Performing Arts Center and starts at 4pm and ends at 5:30pm.  \nAdditionally\, the Lihue public library which will be hosting a pop-up exhibit about the camp for the entire month of July.

Grove Farm will share historical information regarding Kōloa Mill and Allan Smith who served in various leadership positions in the sugar industry and retired as a Senior Vice President for Grove Farm Co. and Jan TenBruggencate who grew up on a pineapple plantation on Molokaʻi and is the author of the books “Lihue Mill: Grinding Cane and Building Community” and “Grove Farm: 150 Years of Stewardship and Innovation\,” will be on hand to “talk story” about plantation life. The tour will encompass a visit to view the exterior of the Kōloa Mill and will include a ride to Waita Reservoir and the Wilcox Tunnel. Reservations required as shuttle seating is limited.

This one-of-a-kind farmers market boasts over 25 participating local farmers\, artisanal product producers and vendors offering fresh vegetables\, fruits and other unique delicacies and is enhanced by live Hawaiian music from local artists and a wine and beer garden at the Palm Court.

DESCRIPTION:Koloa Plantation Days festivities continue at The Shops at Kukui‘ula during the weekly Kaua‘i Culinary Market from 3:30pm to 6pm\, featuring plantation foods and dishes from diverse cultures that were brought to Kaua‘i during the sugar plantation days and continue to be enjoyed by residents and visitors today. At 5pm at the Palm Court\, join us for a special chef demonstration by Kauai Diner Koloa\, which will illustrate the different flavors and cultural influences on local foods. \nThe Kaua‘i Culinary Market is a partnership between The Shops at Kukui‘ula and the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau and is held at The Shops at Kukui‘ula every Wednesday from 3:30pm to 6pm with a special chef demonstration at 5pm. This one-of-a-kind farmers market boasts over 25 participating local farmers\, artisanal product producers and vendors offering fresh vegetables\, fruits and other unique delicacies and is enhanced by live Hawaiian music from local artists and a wine and beer garden at the Palm Court.

SUMMARY:Historic Sugar Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Sugar Exhibit – Plantation Museum\, features portraits of plantation life by photographer Carol Ann Davis\, along with a century of archival images from the plantation era courtesy of Grove Farm Homestead Museum. The exhibit also includes artifacts from plantation camp life provided by local families and the Grove Farm Homestead Museum. Volunteers and docents\, authors\, and historians from the Kaua‘i Historical Society\, which was established in 1914\, will share Kōloa’s cultural traditions\, people\, and stories of Old Kōloa. Grove Farm’s “Long Sugar” and “Sweet Refrain” movies will alternate showings throughout the week. The Exhibit will be open on Monday\, July 20 from 12:00-4:00 p.m.; Tuesday\, July 21 from 12:00-4:00 p.m.; Wednesday\, July 22 from 2:00-6:00 p.m.; Thursday\, July 23 from 12:00-4:00 p.m.; and Friday\, July 24 from 12:00-4:00 p.m.
