While there is no argument that it is easier to stock up on packaged foods for easy meal prep and picnics at the beach\, it’s doing little good for our family’s overall health\, cognitive development\, and behavior. \nFor over a decade\, Angela Kuzma\, co-founder of the Ken-yen Learning Center has been preparing and serving her 20+ students healthy\, vegetarian meals. At their home school\, all students assist in growing and harvesting the school’s vegetables\, and create the meals served each day. Over time and through trial and error\, Angela has created a rolodex of quick and nutritious child-approved meals. She has discovered that with a fun name\, bright flavors\, and creative plating\, children will enthusiastically devour healthy dishes. The chef’s kiss to any family meal is inviting your child to be a part of the entire process so they feel ownership and pride in their food choices. \nIn this class\, Angela will teach Ken-yen’s favorite vegetarian dishes\, including Breakfast Cake\, Macaroni and Cheetah\, Surf’s Up Smoothie Bowl\, and the Tower of Veggies served with Angela’s favorite vegan dipping sauce. \nWe will create dishes that stabilize your child’s blood sugar\, help boost brain power\, and detox their growing bodies. \nAge Requirement: 18 years or older\, this is not a Mommy and Me Class. \nLocation: The Provisions Kitchen in Lawai. The exact location is shared once registered. \nAll the needed ingredients\, recipes\, and tools will be provided so guests may practice the techniques taught during class. \nAngela Kuzma has lived on Kauai for 24 years. She is a wife\, mother of 3\, and a teacher to many amazing kids. She holds a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from La Sierra University and is certified in Holistic Nutrition\, Group Fitness\, and Biomechanics. Kreutzman digs the band so much\, he hired Kanekoa play his wedding – and dubbed them “The Hawaiian Grateful Dead.” \nInspired by the range of musical tastes of its players – and shaped by the land and culture of Hawai’i – Kanekoa delivers island fresh\, innovative sets at every gig. DESCRIPTION:The Lawai International Center will host a traditional ancient Japanese tea ceremony presented by the Urasenke Kaua’i Kyoukai Tea Association on Saturday\, June 15 at 10:30 a.m.\, noon\, and 1:30 p.m. in Kalaheo. \nThis rare event will be held in the Center’s Hall of Compassion\, a hand-carved replica of 13th-century architecture that was built by the hands and hearts of masters in Asia and assembled by volunteers on Kaua’i. As the tea ceremony members mature\, this might be their last year to offer this experience. \nThere will be 25 seats available per session.  Reservations are required. The suggested minimum donation is $40.  For reservations\, text or call (808) 639-1718 or email info@lawaicenter.org. \nThe Lawai International Center\, a non-profit community project\, is an archaeological and cultural treasure in a valley that has long been recognized as a healing sanctuary. In 1904\, the first generation of Japanese immigrants built 88 shrines replicating an ancient pilgrimage of 88 temples in Shikoku\, Japan. Today\, the Center is the only such site existing outside of Japan and is one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites in the country. SUMMARY:152nd King Kamehameha Day Celebration-King’s Parade & Ho’olaule’a
DESCRIPTION:Plan on attending one of the most colorful and special parades on June 15th in honor of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha\, from 9 to 2pm in Lihue. Pa‘u units including the queen and her entourage of princesses are wahine (women) wearing long\, colorful skirts called pa‘u. The wahine characteristically ride astride rather than sidesaddle\, which stems from the early 19th century when horses were introduced to Hawaii and ali‘i (royalty) women dressed up to ride for formal occasions. The riders participated in performances and displays\, the outfits became more elaborate. Other mounted units and displays are included in the parade \nThe long\, colorful skirts are usually of the color of the Hawaiian Islands the rider represents.  Red\, or ʻulaʻula\, is the color of the Island of Hawaiʻi\, nicknamed the Big Island. The ʻŌhiʻa Lehua is their flower.  Pink\, or ʻākala\, is Maui’s color. Nicknamed the Valley Isle\, their flower is the Lokelani Rose.  Gray\, or ʻāhinahina\, is associated with Kahoʻolawe nicknamed the Target Isle. Hinahina is their designated plant.  Orange\, or ʻalani\, is for Lānaʻi nicknamed the Pineapple Isle. Their lei material is the Kaunaʻoa vine.  Green\, or ʻōmaomao\, is the color of Molokaʻi whose nickname is the Friendly Isle. Their flower is that of the Kukui tree.  Yellow\, or melemele\, represents the island of Oʻahu nicknamed the Gathering Place. The ʻIlima is their flower.  The color purple\, or poni\, is for Kauaʻi nicknamed the Garden Isle. Their lei material is the Mokihana berry.  And white\, or keʻokeʻo\, is the color for the Forbidden Isle\, or Niʻihau. Uniquely\, their lei material is the Niʻihau shell. \nThis year is the 16th anniversary of the Kings Parade.  Pau riders wear special flowers and leis\, along with special dresses flowing off the back of the horse. Horses also are decorated with stunning lei configurations and flowers intertwined into manes and tails. This parade is a sight to behold and shouldn’t be missed. \nRoute road closure starts at 8:30 a.m.  The Parade starts from Vidinha Stadium at 9 a.m. and ends at the Historic Kauai County Building. Bring your own lawn chair\, umbrella and aloha!
