SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 6: “Lei Hiwahiwa: A Lei of Tributes” Madison Makanaokukahaku Scott & Kyle La Benz; “Mele & Memory: Alive in Song” Kim Sueoka & Alan Van Zee
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \n\n\n\n\nWeek 6\, March 10:  “Lei Hiwahiwa: A Lei of Tributes” Madison Makanaokukahaku Scott & Kyle La Benz; “Mele & Memory: Alive in Song” Kim Sueoka & Alan Van Zee \nMakanaokahaku & Kyle La Benz will serenade you with sweet voices\, guitar\, ʻukulele and piano as they share the warmth of both traditional and original Hawaiian songs. Makanaokahaku means “gift of God”. Without the burden of eyesight\, Madison focuses on how to experience Godʻs creation through her other heightened senses. A gifted vocalist and pianist\, she studied classical and jazz in her hometown of Cambria\, California. Introduced to Hawaiian music in her teens\, she took to the language as well. Her journey is filled with melodies that tell stories she can’t wait to share with you. \nKyle was raised on O’ahu\, and while a student at San Jose University purchased his first guitar and dove deeply into his love of music.  His rich falsetto soars like the ‘io (Hawaiian hawk).  Kyle teaches and performs regularly on the beautiful Garden Isle of Kaua’i\, where he loves to enjoy opportunities to fish and hike. \nLet Makana and Kyle take you on a musical listening adventure that brings you Aloha.  It’s not just about the notes; it’s about connecting with you through their passion for music\, language and culture. \nKim Sueoka & Alan Van Zee \nKim Sueoka and Alan Van Zee lovingly present a collection of songs with deep ties to the hearts and minds of Kauai’s people; featuring beloved music composed by and for the Hawaiian Monarchy\, songs to awaken collective memory\, and songs that reconnect us to our own precious stories. \nBorn and raised on Kaua’i\, Kim Sueoka grew up among the joyful sounds of family and friends celebrating music\, food\, and togetherness. With guidance and encouragement from her family and teachers here on Kaua’i\, she earned vocal performance degrees in Indiana and Minnesota. She is humbled and grateful to have performed nationally and internationally while building upon her deep interests in Hawaiian music and Participatory Arts. In 2024\, she spearheaded the Music & Memories community sing-along series on Kaua’i with the Alzheimer’s Association. She currently serves as Program Director at Kaua’i Adult Day Health Center and continues to share her love of music with others. \nAlan Van Zee has been part of the music scene on Kauai since the 1980s\, as a singer\, accompanist\, writer\, arranger and director.  Born into a musical family\, Alan was active in musical activities at school\, church and the community from a very young age. He received a BA in Music Theory; moved to England\, where he sang with the BBC Symphony Chorus; and then lived in Japan\, where he was involved in a chamber music group\, mainly playing harpsichord. Currently Alan directs music at St. Michael’s Church in Līhuʻe and is often seen as musical director for Hawaiʻi Children’s Theatre\, as well as pianist with the Sunset Swing Band. \n\n\n\n\n Purchase tickets at:http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! We value and care for our guests and what better way to enjoy the OUTRIGGER Way with an overnight stay. On behalf of EKK and OUTRIGGER Kauai Beach Resort & Spa\, here is a link to our special rates\, as this season is a busy one\, we recommend booking your reservations promptly.  EKK Series Booking Link \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1. Valet parking at the porte-cochere; 2. Free event parking in the unpaved area beyond the covered parking stalls — get there by turning right at the first opportunity and then take a left into a dirt field; or 3. Enter the first gated area on your right\, a bit closer to the ballroom entrance than the dirt entrance\, and turn into that gated area. SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 8: “A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String” featuring Raiatea Helm and an Ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s Top Musicians
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \n Week 8\, March 24:  Raiatea Helm presents: A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String\, Volume One — Raiatea Helm and an Ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s Top Musicians \nJoin us for an extraordinary evening that unites the past and present in a heartfelt celebration of Hawaiʻi’s enduring legacy. Raiatea Helm will present an unforgettable evening showcasing her critically acclaimed album\, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String\, a tribute to the troubadours of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. \nAccompanied by an ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s finest musicians – Ian OʻSullivan\, Duane Padilla\, Scott Robert Villiger\, CaseyAlan Olsen\, and Kapono Lopes — Raiatea breathes new life into these timeless compositions\, honoring the composers and storytellers who shaped Hawaiʻi’s rich musical history. \nRaiatea is one of the last keepers of traditional Hawaiian music\, setting the standard to ensure the quality and authenticity of this cherished art form are preserved and honored. Through her interpretations\, she carries forward the legacy of these mele\, bringing to life the voices and stories of a once-flourishing nation. \nBorn on Oʻahu\, raised on Molokaʻi\, and deeply connected to Hanapēpē\, Kauaʻi\, where her mother is a native\, two-time Grammy nominee and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Raiatea Helm is known for her clear leo kiʻekiʻe (high voice) and her mastery of leo haʻihaʻi —a uniquely Hawaiian vocal style where the intentional breaking of the voice reflects the deep emotions embedded in the poetry of folk songs. These songs speak of love\, longing\, and connection to people and places. \nAs Raiatea prepares for the next installment\, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String: Volume 2\, this performance offers a glimpse into her ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate the music of the Hawaiian Kingdom. \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series!
