SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 4: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders”. Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff”
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 4\, February 24:  “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders” (Paul Ventura\, Pancho Graham\, Norman Kaawa Solomon\, Kilipaki Vaughan). Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff” \nBorn in the fishing village of Miloliʻi on Hawaiʻi Island on May 29\, 1937\, Charlotte Apo grew up in a close-knit community where singing and playing Hawaiian songs was a basic lifestyle. Charlotte attended Kamehameha Schools from 1952 to 1955.  She worked for Hawaiian Airlines playing music and also played music with Aunty Genoa Keawe. Music was a major part of her life. \nIn 2011\, at the age of 74\, Charlotte was clinically diagnosed with Alzheimerʻs. Her short-term memory is nearly non-existent\, but music and long-term memories related to music are fortunately intact. As long as she is prompted with her song titles\, Charlotte can draw from her encyclopedic memory banks of traditional Hawaiian songs and accompanies herself with her zesty ʻukulele strumming. Does she get tired?  Not when she is accompanied by the Mokihana Serenaders\, a dynamite ensemble of Kauaʻi musicians including Pancho Graham on upright bass\, Kilipaki Vaughan on steel guitar\, and Norman Kaʻawa Solomon and Paul Ventura\, Charlotteʻs son\, on guitar. \nAdding to the fun and action for the evening\, kupuna are invited to get up and “strut their stuff” when they are so moved.  It will be hard to keep the kupuna in their chairs with such rousing Hawaiian music. \nCharlotte and the Mokihana Serenaders are embarking on a new “career” playing on the set for the upcoming movie\, “Hawaiian Vacation” which will be released\, hopefully\, soon. \nʻUkulele Hour: Beverly Kauanui \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! We value and care for our guests and what better way to enjoy the OUTRIGGER Way with an overnight stay. On behalf of EKK and OUTRIGGER Kauai Beach Resort & Spa\, here is a link to our special rates\, as this season is a busy one\, we recommend booking your reservations promptly.  EKK Series Booking Link \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1. Valet parking at the porte-cochere; 2. Free event parking in the unpaved area beyond the covered parking stalls — get there by turning right at the first opportunity and then take a left into a dirt field; or 3. Enter the first gated area on your right\, a bit closer to the ballroom entrance than the dirt entrance\, and turn into that gated area. Press a button to make the gate rise\, collect a ticket issued by the machine and hold onto it. Get it validated just inside the ballroom door to receive a special validation for a $10 total parking fee. Use that ticket to exit the gate\, paying the balance due at a kiosk machine near the restrooms or at the gate with your credit card.

SUMMARY:An Evening with David Sedaris
DESCRIPTION:With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques\, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today.\n\nDavid Sedaris is the author of Barrel Fever and Holidays on Ice\, as well as collections of personal essays\, Naked\, Me Talk Pretty One Day\, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim\, When You Are Engulfed in Flames\, and his most recent book\, Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls\, each of which became an immediate bestseller. The audio version of Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls is a 56th Annual GRAMMY Awards Nominee for Best Spoken Word Album. He is the author of the NYT-bestselling collection of fables entitled Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary (with illustrations by Ian Falconer). He was also the editor of Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules: An Anthology of Outstanding Stories. Sedaris’ pieces appear regularly in The New Yorker and have twice been included in “The Best American Essays.” There are over ten million copies of his books in print and they have been translated into 25 languages.\n\nHe and his sister\, Amy Sedaris\, have collaborated under the name “The Talent Family” and have written half-a-dozen plays which have been produced at La Mama\, Lincoln Center\, and The Drama Department in New York City. These plays include Stump the Host\, Stitches\, One Woman Shoe\, which received an Obie Award\, Incident at Cobbler’s Knob\, and The Book of Liz\, which was published in book form by Dramatists Play Service. David Sedaris’ original radio pieces can often be heard on the public radio show This American Life. David Sedaris has been nominated for three Grammy Awards for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album. His latest audio recording of new stories (recorded live) is “David Sedaris: Live for Your Listening Pleasure” (November 2009). A feature film adaptation of his story C.O.G. was released after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival (2013). Since 2011\, he can be heard annually on a series of live recordings on BBC Radio 4 entitled “Meet David Sedaris.” David Sedaris’ new book is a collection of his diaries\, entitled Theft By Finding\, Diaries (1977-2002) (May 2017). An art book\, about David Sedaris’ diary covers was also just published and edited by Jeffrey Jenkins\, entitled: David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium (October 2017\, Little\, Brown and Company). The nationally bestselling essay collection Calypso was published in June 2018\, and a second volume of his diaries is expected for summer 2021.\n\nDavid will read from some of his latest writing for one night only and autograph books previously purchased and purchased that night.

SUMMARY:E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui
DESCRIPTION:About E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nE Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui is a Hawaiian hula conference and retreat that has been held for over 20 years. Our program has a global reach and has been held on the Island of Kaua’i\, Japan\, Tahiti & Marqueses. In addition\, we have held our retreats in Canada and California to include Sacramento and San Diego. \nThe English translation of E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui is “Come together as one body of people” \nMission\nTo promote\, to share\, to perpetuate Hawai’i’s rich culture and heritage by sustaining and further educating all ages who are practitioners of the hula art form.  And to bring all hula closer together as a “body of people.” \nConcept\nTo organize a highly professional teaching staff that consists of elite Kumu Hula devoted to ensuring the art of hula will be passed on from generation to generation with accuracy and integrity.  These kumu hula\, kupuna\, or professors\, shall posses proven track records in hula training\, education\, experience\, language\, history\, and reputation\, to preserve and promote Hawai’i’s cultural dance through proven methods to enrich and enhance the eager students learning experience.  To broaden their training\, thinking\, and understanding of the hula in its entirety both on the individual and halau levels.  This will be achieved through the creation and implementation of nine to twelve various renown kumu hula\, kupuna\, island wide to achieve the highest in quality and to bring together the local and neighboring island nā kumu hula and haumana to participate in a non-competitive environment as a “body of people.” \nWhat is a Hula Retreat?\nA multi-two day seminar in which non-hula dancers\, hula students\, leaders\, experts\, and teachers to come together in a common bond to celebrate the hula!  They will learn\, experience\, exchange dances and ideas\, share\, meet new friends\, increase their knowledge in hula\, improve their history\, language\, usage of native plants in hula\, improve their self-esteem and confidence.  Several levels and specialized classes and subject matters are implemented and conducted to ensure all interests and all ages will want to participate. \nE Pili Kākou I Ho’okahi Lāhui is a three-day event that brings together some of Hawaii’s most accomplished hula instructors (kumu hula) and cultural specialists to teach workshops in all styles of hula and chanting as well as to share the stories and spirituality behind the dance.  The event also showcases many of the arts and crafts unique to the islands.  The setting is non-competitive and open\, which helps to accomplish one of the main goals of this event\, which is to foster a feeling of “lōkahi” or unity amongst a diversity of hula practitioners worldwide.  From its humble beginnings in 1998 with 100 participants mainly from Kaua`i only\, the event has grown to host well over 400 attendees\, hailing from all over Hawaii and the mainland as well as Japan\, Canada\, and Europe.  EPK is currently embarking on its 20th annual event with over thirty successful hula retreats across 4 countries! \n“Let’s join together as one body of people”.  Inspired by a biblical passage (1 Cor 12:12- 27)\, this retreat hosts practitioners and teachers of hula as well as general hula and Hawaiian culture enthusiasts from around the world for three days of workshops and evening functions designed to truly celebrate the one spirit of hula that unites all who love this unique dance form and culture. For sixteen years now\, E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui has been dedicated to this mission.  Each year\, kumu hula and kupuna from throughout Hawai`i are invited to pass on their teachings to eager participants. These dedicated individuals are steadfast in ensuring that the art of hula will be perpetuated with great love and respect for the culture and its people.  Each is highly reputable in hula training\, education\, experiences\, language and history and is inspired to share the spiritual essence of hula.  They have been invited to participate in this retreat as a means of preserving and promoting Hawai`i’s cultural dance in a non-competitive and nurturing environment. This devotion to excellence from nā kumu hula\, na kupuna and various other Hawaiian cultural specialists\, shall provide each student with an opportunity to broaden their training\, thinking and understanding of hula in its entirety on both an individual and hālau level. Specialized classes in topics related to hula and the culture will be available for the non-dancer\, providing an opportunity to participate\, regardless of physical abilities or experience with hula. \nEach year the event honors a special individual who exemplifies the high standards and values we as practitioners continue to strive to emulate and achieve.  In the past\, we have been blessed to honor Hawai’i’s treasures who have since passed on\, including Lovey Apana\, Malia Craver\, Genoa Keawe\, Rubelite Kawena Johnson\, Kapeka Chandler\, Mary Louise Kekuewa\, Ku’uleialoha Punua\, Joan Lindsey\, Mary Ann Lim\, George Holokai and Darrell ‘Ihi’ihilauākea Lupenui.  Living treasures we’ve been blessed to honor and continue to cherish as supporters of E Pili Kākou are Pohai Souza\, Coline Aiu\, Kealoha Kalama\, Kawaikapuokalani Hewett\, Mae Kamamalu Klein\, Ed Collier\, Leimomi Ho and Ainsley Hlemanu. \nFrom keiki to kupuna\, “E Pili Kākou Ho`okahi Lāhui” Hula Retreat is sure to give all of its participants a wonderful\, positive experience upon which to reflect and grow.  We hope you will come and partake of this “offering of hula” and allow its spirit to connect and “pili” each one of us.  What better way to celebrate life and peace…Let’s truly “come together as one body of people”!

SUMMARY:Cliburn Piano Competition Finalist Clayton Stephenson
DESCRIPTION:American pianist Clayton Stephenson’s love for music is immediately apparent in his joyous charisma onstage\, expressive power\, and natural ease at the instrument. Hailed for “extraordinary narrative and poetic gifts” and interpretations that are “fresh\, incisive and characterfully alive” (Gramophone)\, he is committed to making an impact on the world through his music-making. \nGrowing up in New York City\, Clayton started piano lessons at age 7\, and the next year was accepted into The Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program—a full scholarship program for under-represented students—where he lingered to watch student recitals and fell in love with music. He advanced to Juilliard’s elite Pre-College at age 10—with the help of his teacher at the time\, Beth Nam\, who gave him countless extra lessons without charge—to study with Matti Raekallio\, Hung-Kuang Chen\, and Ernest Barretta. Clayton practiced on a synthesizer at home until he found an old upright piano on the street that an elementary school had thrown away; that would become his practice piano for the next six years\, until the Lang Lang Foundation donated a new piano to him when he was 17. \nHe credits the generous support of community programs with providing him musical inspiration and resources along the way. As he describes it\, the “Third Street Music School jump-started my music education; the Young People’s Choir taught me phrasing and voicing; Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program introduced me to formal and rigorous piano training\, which enabled me to get into Juilliard Pre-College; the Morningside Music Bridge validated my talent and elevated my self-confidence; the Boy’s Club of New York exposed me to jazz; and the Lang Lang Foundation brought me to stages worldwide and transformed me from a piano student to a young artist.” \nClayton graduated from the Harvard-New England Conservatory (NEC) dual degree program in spring 2023 with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard and a master’s degree in piano performance from NEC under Wha Kyung Byun. And his accolades along the way have been bountiful: in addition to being the first Black finalist at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2022\, he was named 2022 Gilmore Young Artist; 2017 U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts; Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist; Gheens Young Artist; and Young Scholar of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. \nRecent and upcoming highlights include concertos with the Houston and North Carolina Symphonies and Las Vegas Philharmonic; festival appearances at Grand Teton and Tippet Rise; recitals at venues including Fondation Louis Vuitton and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall; and collaborations with violinists Nikki and Timothy Chooi in Europe\, Canada\, and the United States.
