DESCRIPTION:“New Insights into Hawaiʻi Humpback Whale Behavior and Ecology” – A Simplified Interpretation by Jean Souza \nThe Princeville Moʻolelo series will continue on Tuesday\, January 14th with a talk by Jean Souza\, Program Specialist\, Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary\, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. \nThe Hawaiian Archipelago is the largest breeding and calving area for humpback whales in the North Pacific. For decades since the international ban on whaling\, the population of humpback whales in Hawaiʻi has increased steadily\, until the huge “blob” of hot ocean water formed in the eastern North Pacific in 2015. This multi-media presentation presents insights into the immense and lingering impacts of the “blob” on the Hawaiʻi subpopulation\, and on many recent Hawaiʻi-based humpback whale research findings. \nThe mission of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is to protect Hawaiʻi humpback whales and their habitat through education\, research\, and resource protection efforts with partners. \nFree Lecture Series: Tuesday\, January 14\, 2025\, at 5:00-6:30pm in the Princeville Community Center. The presentation will also be available via Zoom.
