SUMMARY:Princeville Moʻolelo Free Lecture Series: “Ka Pae ʻĀina O Hawaiʻi Nei”
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges Princeville Moʻolelo free lecture series will continue on Tuesday\, September 17\, 2024 with a very special presentation by Kumu Hula Kehaulani Kekua of Halau Palaihiwa O Kaipuwai and artist Kathleen Ho. \n“Ka Pae ʻĀina O Hawaiʻi Nei”\, is a culturally centered educational program and a community created mosaic mural that is being offered by the Garden Island Arts Council. Join us in learning about the program and how to be further involved in future workshops\, helping to create an 80-foot-long by 4-foot-high mosaic mural that depicts the entire Hawaiian Archipelago. A place-based inspired design for the Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge\, the finished mosaic will be installed on the retaining wall that begins right outside the Visitor Center and Friends Nature Store. \n“Ka Pae ʻĀina O Hawaiʻi Nei” Hawaiian Archipelago Mosaic Program blends Hawaiian culture\, education\, and art through integrated opportunities created for Kauaʻi’s community and visitors. Participants will learn about the Hawaiian Archipelago and have a tactile involvement in and ownership of a collaborative public art mural. \nThis mini workshop will be led by Kumu Hula Kehaulani Kekua of Hālau Palaihiwa O Kaʻipuwai and artist Kathleen Ho. Kumu Kehau brings her wealth of skills\, passion\, and commitment to sharing ancestral wisdom and perpetuating the traditions of her culture. She will introduce a cultural version of the birth of the Hawaiian Archipelago and a short oli (chant). Kathleen has done other community cultural-inspired mosaics throughout Kauaʻi. She will share the inspiration and intention of this large-scale project and facilitate the hands-on process of mosaic making. \nFree Lecture Series: Tuesday\, September 17\, 2024 at 5pm in the Princeville Community Center. The presentation will also be available via Zoom. For more information\, visit http://www.kauairefuges.org/princeville-moolelo. \nAbout the Series: Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges is pleased to partner with the Princeville at Hanalei Community Association Events Committee to present this engaging series. Together\, they are presenting free informative “talk story” events monthly in the Princeville Community Center to share the work and stories of conservation partners\, Hawaiian cultural practitioners and more. \nAbout Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges: Kīlauea Point Natural History Association\, doing business as “Friends of Kauaʻi Wildlife Refuges\,” serves as a 501(c)(3) non-profit Friends Group that supports the wildlife conservation\, education\, and historic preservation work of the Kauaʻi National Wildlife Refuge Complex\, which includes Kīlauea Point\, Hanalei and Hulēʻia NWRs.  With donations\, plus proceeds from Nature Store operations\, the organization supports visitor education\, provides rehabilitative care for sick or injured native Hawaiian birds\, volunteer training\, special events\, equipment for wildlife habitat maintenance and restoration\, free bussing for school field trips to a refuge\, awards annual scholarships for college students pursuing environmental studies and more. SUMMARY:Dirty Cello Makes Porter Pavilion Debut
DESCRIPTION:Dirty Cello Makes Porter Pavilion Debut\nFrom Iceland to Italy\, and all over the U.S.\, San Francisco based band Dirty Cello brings the world a high energy and unique spin on blues\, rock\, and Americana. Led by vivacious cross-over cellist\, Rebecca Roudman\, Dirty Cello is cello like you’ve never heard before. From down home blues and rock with a wailing cello to virtuosic stompin’ Americana\, Dirty Cello is a band that gets your heart thumping and your toes tapping! \n“Dirty Cello’s music is all over the map: funky\, carnival\, romantic\, sexy\, tangled\, electric\, fiercely rhythmic\, and textured\, and only occasionally classical.” Oakland Magazine \n“The band plays every style imaginable\, and does some fantastic covers. (Their rendition of “Purple Haze” is incredible.) But what is most spectacular about them is hearing the depth of soul in Roudman’s playing—it goes beyond what most people would expect from the instrument. She plays it with so much heart\, you’ll wonder why more bands don’t have a cellist.” Good Times Santa Cruz \n“A five-piece string ensemble that truly pushes the envelope and breaks the barriers\, they blend blues\, bluegrass and world music sounds with roots in the world of European classical music in a style that is unique and refreshing.” Cloverdale Reveille \n“The group seamlessly careens from blues to bluegrass and rock in a way that really shouldn’t make sense but somehow does.” LA Times \n“The ensemble plays a range of eclectic tunes in ways you won’t hear anyone else dare to attempt.” – Argus Courier \n“Anyone who’s been in an audience when the San Francisco Bay Area Dirty Cello takes the stage knows that something unique happens whenever cellist Rebecca Roudman and ensemble come face to face with living\, breathing (and whooping and shouting) fans.” \n\nStrings Magazine\n\n“Dirty Cello have been hard to describe\, apart from saying that a cello (played in ways you won’t quite believe) is involved\, and the range of music takes the word eclectic and supercharges it to meltdown levels of energy and invention.” – Argus Courier \nSOCIAL MEDIA: \nfacebook.com/dirtycellomusic\ninstagram.com/dirtycello\ntwitter.com/dirtycello\nDirtycello.com \nShow Date\nSeptember\, 21\, 2024 \nTickets – Available Here!\nAll tickets subject to tax and fees\nGA Tickets $35 advance \nDay of Show Tickets $45 if available. \nShow Details\nDoors: 5:30pm\nMusic: 6:30pm
