SUMMARY:Duo Diorama (Chicago) – Minghuan Xu\, violin\, Winston Choi\, piano
DESCRIPTION:For Immediate release\nSubject: Duo Diorama on Kauai\nDate: April 9\, 2024\nContact: Robert Pollock\, (808) 876-1854 \nKeokea…On Saturday\, June 1st\, 7PM\, Ebb & Flow Arts will\npresent Duo Diorama – Minghuan Xu\, violin\, and Winston Choi\, piano – in a concert featuring works by Béla Bartók\, Alfred Schnittke\, Dmitri Shostakovich\, John Corigliano\, Augusta Read Thomas\, and Robert Pollock. The site of these concerts is the St. Michael All Angels Episcopal Church\, 4364 Hardy Street in Lihue\, Kauai. A pre-concert discussion will occur at 6PM. \nAdmission is free! \nJust before the lockdown\, Ebb & Flow Arts was to present Duo Diorama on Kauai. Unfortunately E&FA had to cancel the concert because of the pandemic.. Thanks to a grant from the Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts\, E&FA will be able to pick up where we left up with this June 1st concert. \n“We are thrilled to present Duo Diorama once again\,” says Robert Pollock\, Executive Director of E&FA. “They are some of the leading exponents of Modern Music\,” he adds. \n“Both players were terrific. Xu’s fiddling featured spotless finger and bow technique\, a keen feel for dramatic flair\, and a big\, sturdy tone free of forcing. Choi was a more than equal partner at the keyboard. His sound was lively and lucid\, his digital work was immaculate\, and his shaping of material showed insightful articulation of phrase and voicing.”—New Music Connoisseur \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Choi is an intellectual when it comes to music\,”said Conductor Victor Yampolsky. “It manifests itself in his handling of musical forms and composers’ styles and wishes. Xu is spontaneous\, rhapsodic\, and romantic. Together\, it is a wonderful dynamic.” \nThis event is part of E&FA’s annual\, multi day\, multi site\, international NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST FESTIVAL 2024. NSEW Fest 2024 is produced\, in part\, with support from Hawai’i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts\, Korean American Foundation Hawai’i\, AHS Foundation\, John R. Halligan Charitable Fund\, Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music\, Edward T. Cone Foundation\, Amphion Foundation\, BMI Foundation\, The Kosasa Foundation\, Vendetti Productions LLC\, and private contributions. Web site service provided by Maui Web Designs. \nEbb & Flow Arts\, Inc. (E&FA) is a non profit presenter of modern music and multi media events. It is the only such presenter in Hawai’i\, and was founded in 1999\, by composer/pianist Robert Pollock. It aims to build bridges between the arts and connect artistic expressions and cultures. E&FA creates a global sound board and mirror for music and art in Hawai’i. \nFurther information: http://www.ebbandflowarts.org \, (808) 876-1854\, and ebbandflowarts2013@gmail.com Find us on FACEBOOK-www.facebook.com/ \nebbandflowarts

SUMMARY:Kaua‘i Songwriters Music Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Kauai Songwriters Music Festival is a celebration of the art of songwriting. This year’s festival includes workshops for songwriters on Friday and Saturday followed by an evening concert on Saturday open to the public. Tickets to the concert are $35 in advance. The workshops are $80 and include a concert ticket.  https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/ec6566a0-e92f-425d-8a10-528316334d56 \nFunded with support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority through the Community Enrichment Plan and the County of Kauai and the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. \nPerformers and Presenters Include: \nJason Blume is the author of 6 Steps to Songwriting Success\, This Business of Songwriting\, and Inside Songwriting (Billboard Books). His songs have been recorded by Britney Spears\, the Backstreet Boys\, the Oak Ridge Boys and many others\, selling more than 50\,000\,000 copies. His song\, “Come Back” was the debut single for Na Hoku Hanohano award winning band “Crossing Rain.” \nJason’s songs have been included in films and TV shows including “Scrubs\,” “Friday Night Lights\,” “Assassination Games\,” Disney’s “Kim Possible” “Dangerous Minds\,” “Kickin’ it Old Skool\,” “The Guiding Light\,” “The Miss America Pageant\,” and many more. He studied film and television composing at U.C.L.A.\, and contributed songs and background score for Emmy-winning and Emmy nominated TV shows. A guest lecturer at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney) and at the Berklee School of Music\, he teaches the BMI Songwriter Workshops and has taught master classes in more than ten countries. He has published more than 125 articles in BMI’s magazines\, and has been interviewed as a songwriting expert for CNN\, NPR\, the BBC\, Rolling Stone\, and the New York Times. \nEmily Elbert builds her home in between worlds. In music\, she connects disparate concepts: traversing wide-ranging styles\, expressing both the contemplative and celebratory\, and fusing the Earthly with the ethereal. She’s honed her artistry on the road\, playing over a thousand independent solo shows from Peru to Palestine – but she has also become a sought-after collaborator\, playing in the bands of luminary artists including Leon Bridges\, Jacob Collier\, Esperanza Spalding\, Sara Bareilles\, Lorde\, and Jenny Lewis. All of these experiences feed into her music today. Anchored by what L.A. Weekly calls a “funky\, engrossing groove\,” the publication notes\, “Elbert would be considered remarkable just for her guitar playing\, which segues from hard-edged funk and blues to more gently subtle jazz intricacy. But she’s an equally adept vocalist\, weaving her soulful phrasing nimbly within the rhythms of her guitar chords.” \nEmily recently released her sixth independent album\, Woven Together\, a rhythmic\, flowing ode to the intersections of sensuality\, healing and progress. Upon its release\, PopMatters remarked\, “though it would be safe to call her a spiritual successor to Joni Mitchell\, Elbert is truly a chameleonic composer…this is Emily Elbert\, a name to bookmark.” \nSongwriter Ken Emerson and special guests will be featured. Ken Emerson is one of the world’s most highly regarded traditional Hawaiian slack key & steel guitarists living today. He is a monster player of both\, and he switches easily between them during his performances\, laying his guitar on his lap and picking up a steel bar for an instrumental interlude. Emerson is famous for his one-of-a-kind slack/steel style playing of vintage acoustic steel-bodied National Resonator guitars. Emerson won the prestigious Kahili Award for perpetuating Hawaiian culture and was a featured artist and composer on the first-ever National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences Grammy Award-winning Best Hawaiian Album. Emerson’s playing was also featured on Donald Fagen’s (Steely Dan) Grammy Award-winning Morph the Cat. He has many additional touring/recording credits including Jackson Brown\, Boz Scaggs\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Taj Mahal\,      Todd Rundgren\, Ramblin” Jack Elliott\, and Elvin Bishop. \nRock Hendricks is a world-renowned saxophonist\, producer\, and recording engineer. Throughout his career\, Rock performed and recorded with many legendary performers such as Michael Jackson\, John Lee Hooker\, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood\, The Funkadelics\, Michael Buble\, Marvin Gaye Jr.\, Marvin Gaye Jr. III\, The Temptations\, Bobby Womack\, Coke Escovedo\, Walter Becker and Don Fagan\, Steve Arrington\, The Family Stone\, Bonnie Raitt\, Leon Russel\, Dave Mason\, Sammy Hagar\, Motown Records\, Gabriel Hasselbach\, Jeff Lorber\, and Paul Hardcastle. \nRock wrote and produced music for the Electronic Arts game “The Sims” with over 150 million games sold. \nRock has recorded over 30 songs with Paul Hardcastle and has had nine Billboard #1 smooth jazz hits.  Rock is playing sax with Paul on yet another upcoming album to be released at the end of 2023. \nAllan Thomas is a longtime singer songwriter\, guitarist\, recording artist\, performer\, record producer and engineer. He has released seven albums of original material and is currently working on his 8th release. Mr Thomas receives airplay from his various releases worldwide. \nAllan has been writing songs since a late teen in 1967. He released his first album of original material for Sire Records in 1971. AT was a staff-songwriter for ABC Music in Los Angeles in the late 1980’s. \nMr Thomas has recorded and performed with Cannonball Adderley Quintet\, Graham Nash\,  David Crosby and Donald Fagen among others. He has opened shows for Weather Report\, Taj Mahal and Richie Havens among others. \nSome of Allan’s current recording band members include: Keith Carlock drums (Steely Dan)\, Jimmy Johnson bass (James Taylor)\, Russell Ferrante piano (Yellowjackets) Will Kennedy drums (Yellowjackets) Dean Parks guitar (Steely Dan) and Michael Landau guitar (Miles Davis). \nRandy Tico is known to many for his bass work with a diverse range of artists such as the critically acclaimed jazz nonet Matrix\, Jeff Bridges\, Strunz & Farah\, Airto & Flora Purim\, Jose Feliciano\, Kenny Loggins and John McEuen. \nBut to a whole other world he has established himself as an  award winning composer/sound designer for theater with Critical Mass Performance Group\, Denver Center of the Performing Arts\, Portland Center Stage\, Theater @ Boston Court and Ensemble Theater Company in his home town of Santa Barbara. \nEclectico brings these worlds together with a heartfelt journey through sonic landscapes sometimes uplifting\, other times bittersweet but always rich with emotion and gorgeous instrumental performances. Drawing from award winning theater scores\, soundtracks  and new compositions Eclectico is Tico’s first release since Earth Dance on Higher Octave in 1990. .

SUMMARY:152nd King Kamehameha Day Celebration-King’s Parade & Ho’olaule’a
DESCRIPTION:Plan on attending one of the most colorful and special parades on June 15th in honor of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha\, from 9 to 2pm in Lihue. Pa‘u units including the queen and her entourage of princesses are wahine (women) wearing long\, colorful skirts called pa‘u. The wahine characteristically ride astride rather than sidesaddle\, which stems from the early 19th century when horses were introduced to Hawaii and ali‘i (royalty) women dressed up to ride for formal occasions. The riders participated in performances and displays\, the outfits became more elaborate. Other mounted units and displays are included in the parade \nThe long\, colorful skirts are usually of the color of the Hawaiian Islands the rider represents.  Red\, or ʻulaʻula\, is the color of the Island of Hawaiʻi\, nicknamed the Big Island. The ʻŌhiʻa Lehua is their flower.  Pink\, or ʻākala\, is Maui’s color. Nicknamed the Valley Isle\, their flower is the Lokelani Rose.  Gray\, or ʻāhinahina\, is associated with Kahoʻolawe nicknamed the Target Isle. Hinahina is their designated plant.  Orange\, or ʻalani\, is for Lānaʻi nicknamed the Pineapple Isle. Their lei material is the Kaunaʻoa vine.  Green\, or ʻōmaomao\, is the color of Molokaʻi whose nickname is the Friendly Isle. Their flower is that of the Kukui tree.  Yellow\, or melemele\, represents the island of Oʻahu nicknamed the Gathering Place. The ʻIlima is their flower.  The color purple\, or poni\, is for Kauaʻi nicknamed the Garden Isle. Their lei material is the Mokihana berry.  And white\, or keʻokeʻo\, is the color for the Forbidden Isle\, or Niʻihau. Uniquely\, their lei material is the Niʻihau shell. \nThis year is the 16th anniversary of the Kings Parade.  Pau riders wear special flowers and leis\, along with special dresses flowing off the back of the horse. Horses also are decorated with stunning lei configurations and flowers intertwined into manes and tails. This parade is a sight to behold and shouldn’t be missed. \nRoute road closure starts at 8:30 a.m.  The Parade starts from Vidinha Stadium at 9 a.m. and ends at the Historic Kauai County Building. Bring your own lawn chair\, umbrella and aloha!

SUMMARY:TRADITIONAL ANCIENT JAPANESE TEA CEREMONY JUNE 15
DESCRIPTION:The Lawai International Center will host a traditional ancient Japanese tea ceremony presented by the Urasenke Kaua’i Kyoukai Tea Association on Saturday\, June 15 at 10:30 a.m.\, noon\, and 1:30 p.m. in Kalaheo. \nThis rare event will be held in the Center’s Hall of Compassion\, a hand-carved replica of 13th-century architecture that was built by the hands and hearts of masters in Asia and assembled by volunteers on Kaua’i. As the tea ceremony members mature\, this might be their last year to offer this experience. \nThere will be 25 seats available per session.  Reservations are required. The suggested minimum donation is $40.  For reservations\, text or call (808) 639-1718 or email info@lawaicenter.org. \nThe Lawai International Center\, a non-profit community project\, is an archaeological and cultural treasure in a valley that has long been recognized as a healing sanctuary. In 1904\, the first generation of Japanese immigrants built 88 shrines replicating an ancient pilgrimage of 88 temples in Shikoku\, Japan. Today\, the Center is the only such site existing outside of Japan and is one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites in the country. Volunteers are bringing these shrines and this valley back to prominence as an international center for compassion\, education and cultural understanding.  For more information about the Center: www.lawaicenter.org. \nThis special event is made possible with the generous support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority.

SUMMARY:Kanekoa – Tribute to the Allman Brothers
DESCRIPTION:Kanekoa Plays Tribute to the Allman Brothers\nShow Date\nJune 15\, 2024 \nDoors open at 5:30PM \nEvery time the Maui-based jam-band Kanekoa takes the stage\, their improvisational blend of Hawaiian\, rock\, folk\, blues\, reggae\, R&B and soul energizes the crowd – fueling the band’s flourishing fandom of Koa-heads. \nKaulana Kanekoa (rhythm ukulele\, lead vocals\, lyrics)\, Vince Esquire (lead ukulele\, backing vocals)\, Travis Rice (cajon/congas\, kit\, backing vocals)\, and Don Lopez (U•BASS\, electric bass\, backing vocals) have been playing together since the late 1990s. They have created a truly unique sound by embracing the yet-untapped potential of the electrified ukulele – and then taking it higher. \nThe band opened for Los Lobos on its recent Hawaiian tour\, and has shared the stage and/or jammed with many top-notch talents including Willie Nelson\, Jake Shimabukuro\, Willie K\, G Love\, John Cruz\, John Popper of Blues Traveler\, and 7 Walkers\, which is Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzman’s band. Kreutzman digs the band so much\, he hired Kanekoa play his wedding – and dubbed them “The Hawaiian Grateful Dead.” \nInspired by the range of musical tastes of its players – and shaped by the land and culture of Hawai’i – Kanekoa delivers island fresh\, innovative sets at every gig. The band’s vast influences shine throughout both their original music and their interpretations of popular songs. SUMMARY:VIRTUOSO JAZZ – Inspirations Ensemble from Canada
DESCRIPTION:The originality of the InSpirations ensemble finds its essence in the subtle assembly of acoustic instruments around the organ\, thus offering a palette of infinitely varied colors. At the heart of Impressions\, the organ becomes a unifying and versatile instrument\, capable of unusual sound textures in synergy with the quartet’s interventions. The immense variety of organ timbres provides an ideal canvas for improvising saxophones and clarinets\, trombones\, percussion\, and double bass.  Impressions is the culmination of stylistic research initiated by each member of the group who\, in concert\, stage original compositions and adaptations of repertoire works. Witness an era rich in cultural convergences and artistic crossbreeding\, the Inspirations Ensemble. \n  \n
