SUMMARY:JAKE SHIMABUKURO
DESCRIPTION:Show Date\nSaturday\, February 15th\, 2025 \nJake Shimabukuro – TICKETS HERE\nSince gaining prominence in the early 2000’s\, ukulele marvel Jake Shimabukuro has mesmerized audiences with his innovative and dynamic style\, taking the instrument to dizzying new heights. Over a dozen solo albums\, Shimabukuro has shown a knack for moving effortlessly between genres\, sometimes in the same song. After being taught the instrument by his mother at age four\, Jake became a local phenom\, performing on his own and in a local group Pure Heart. Early in his solo career he became a YouTube sensation when his cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” went viral. Since then\, Jake has gone on to play the world’s most venerable venues\, from The Hollywood Bowl to Lincoln Center to the Sydney Opera House and The N.O. Jazz Fests and collaborated with some of the world’s greatest musicians\, including Yo-Yo Ma\, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones\, Jimmy Buffett\, Jack Johnson\, Bette Midler\, Ziggy Marley\, Sonny Landreth\, Billy Strings\, Lukas & Willie Nelson and Warren Haynes. Shimabukuro has also won his share of awards and\, just a few years ago he was nominated by President Joe Biden to serve as a Member for the National Council on the Arts. \nOne strong thread that runs through much of Shimabukuro’s work is that of collaboration. From the Trio album to Jake & Friends to Grateful and beyond\, Shimabukuro thrives in the ability to feed off and inspire his fellow musicians. For his brand-new project Blues Experience\, Shimabukuro joins forces with his friend\, drumming legend and founding member of Fleetwood Mac\, Mick Fleetwood\, to create a fresh new take on the Blues. “I’ve always wanted to do a Blues album and when Mick and I started talking about working together\, I thought who better to work with than Mick Fleetwood?” The result is something exhilarating and unique\, as these two titans of their instruments reinterpret some of the greatest songs written by some of their favorite songwriters in a Blues setting. \nIt’s a union whose roots go back to the late 1990s when a young Shimabukuro met and played with Fleetwood at the Hawaiian Music Awards ceremony along with singer songwriter Kenny Loggins. It wasn’t until a few years ago\, that the two were reconnected by a mutual friend at a Fleetwood Mac reunion concert in Nashville. That night\, the seeds of the collaboration were planted at Fleetwood’s suggestion. Not long thereafter the two convened along with Jake’s touring bassist Jackson Waldhoff and keyboard player Michael Grande to start work on a new studio album in Maui. Mark Johnstone from The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band plays keys on two songs\, “Need Your Love So Bad”\, and “Rockin’ In The Free World”. \nOver the course of two 3-day sessions\, the band recorded 9 songs live in the studio. The only track that was not recorded with all of the musicians playing together was Sonny Landreth’s brilliant slide guitar on the Jeff Beck/Stevie Wonder classic “Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers”. This soaring track full of peaks and valleys was a tremendous way to start the album. The interplay between Landreth and Shimabukuro is so seamless\, you’d never know that they did not play together in the same room. The Chemistry is due in large part to the two performing the song w ww.sarapetite.com | http://www.fortybelowrecords.com together during a recent tour. In addition\, Sonny would often sit in with Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band back when Jake was a member. \nUp next is a truly unique interpretation of the Blues standard\, “Rollin’ N Tumblin’”. The song fades in with a swirling\, delay-drenched psychedelic uke over top of Fleetwood’s tribal drumming pattern\, giving credence to why Jake is often referred to as the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele”. Then\, on a dime\, Jake changes his sound and cuts to playing the song’s theme which is echoed nicely by the Hammond Organ. \nJake’s playing on the track is experimental and otherworldly\, at times ascending into a psych jazz rock fusion in the most visceral ways. “Mick’s energy when he plays is so infectious. He’s such an intense musician. He pushes everyone around him and it’s so inspiring to see his facial expressions and watch his movements and the way he hits the drums\,” says Shimabukuro exuberantly. \nAbout “Kula Blues” Jake explains\, “I’d never written anything that sounded this bluesy or a shuffle\, so I wanted to take a stab at it and have a song where any musician could sit in without needing a chart”. Again\, Jake credits Mick Fleetwood with bringing the track to life. “He just got behind the drums and without even counting it off came charging in. You either jump on the train or get outta the way!” \nA couple of other standouts on the album are “Whiter Shade of Pale” and “Rockin’ in the Free World”. Of the former\, Shimabukuro recalls “I was so in the moment\, I remember just closing my eyes and really forgetting my pedal board and everything and just reacting to Mick and the band.” \nFortuitously\, The Bridge School Benefit\, founded by Neil Young had asked Jake if he would do a cover of “Rockin’ in the Free World” and the same week he and Mick were in the studio. The track has an explosive energy that builds to an incendiary psychedelic guitar\, ‘er make that ukulele solo spurred on by Fleetwood’s thunderous drums. \nOne of the things that really comes across speaking to Jake about this record is the ‘spirits in the air’ during the recordings. This is particularly apparent on their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird”. Recorded not long after Christine McVie’s passing\, the band only did one take. You can feel the emotion in the performance. “I remember Mick took a moment of silence after the song ended and you could see that he felt Christine’s presence.” Fleetwood’s tom tom groove provides the heartbeat for Shimabukuro’s floaty\, ethereal uke\, as he moves naturally between fast strumming chords and lilting melodic phrases. “I felt so fortunate to be able to experience that with Mick. It was very powerful to see the effect it had on him.” \nAnother ‘ghost in the machine’ or ‘happy accident’ was the sound of the drums leaking into the ukulele’s electric pickup. Because the musicians were so close together\, you can hear all the drums on the ukulele track. When the fx are going on the uke\, you get this cool subtle layer of the drum fx in the mix\, contributing to the overall vibe and cohesion of the record. Not long after the completion of the record\, Maui was devastated by historic wildfires. At the benefit concert in Honolulu Fleetwood once again joined Shimabukuro and the band to perform the songs on Blues Experience for the first time. Before the performance\, Fleetwood gave a powerful and inspirational speech to the community. Shimabukuro expands on this\, \, “Mick’s like the point guard on a basketball team making everyone around him play better. It’s really incredible. He has such a huge presence\, charisma and energy. It was such an honor to do this project together. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nThis is a tiered ticketing level show. \nVIP Pavilion Seating includes access to the front row of seats in the pavilion. SUMMARY:Kahili Feather Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Looking for volunteers who would like to be part of this project to make 2 large feather Kahili’s for our upcoming Kaua’i King’s Parade on June 14\, 2025. Laura Wolfgang a Kumu Lei Hulu (Master feather lei maker) will be teaching the class. \nLaura “Kawailehua” Wolfgang has been a Lei Hulu Practitioner for the past 7 years although her love of feather art started approximately 60 years ago during her school visit to the Bishop Museum. Since that time\, she has visited the museum with most annual visits home while she was living in the mainland serving in the US Navy as a Navy Nurse Practitioner. Her fascination with feather art continued and after researching\, found an online course on creating lei hulu. Her Kumu\, Auntie Pattie Hannah-Gomez of Maui Feather Lei recognized her talents and pushed her skills and creativity. She was then granted permission to formally teach and finished her uniki process in 2024. \nShe now owns Na Hulu Arts and actively teaches at the Kaua’i Museum and with private lessons. She also serves as a vendor to many Kaua’i Made and Hawaiian cultural events to include Merrie Monarch. She states that her main purpose is to perpetuate this art and hopes that younger local folks will learn\, cherish and continue to keep this art form alive. \nAlthough she has never constructed a large kahili\, she is well versed at making smaller kahili and creating the “bundles” and “branches” that are used in the large kahili. With her teaching skills she will help to lead this historical event to create two beautiful large kahili for the community to display for many years to come. \nYOU MUST SIGNUP TO ATTEND \nMore information will be given once you register for the class. There is no fee to attend\, only a commitment to take part in this project. \n

SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 3: Jamminʻ with the Masters – Ledward Kaapana\, Jeff Peterson\, Bobby Ingano & David Kamakahi
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 3\, February 17 – Jamminʻ with the Masters – Ledward Kaapana\, Jeff Peterson\, Bobby Ingano & David Kamakahi \nThe fortunate few who get to sit backstage or in the garage while master musicians have fun sharing their joy of music in informal kanikapila-style experience a very special scene. Four master musicians at the top of their game will welcome you into their special space where they talk music to each other\, challenge each other\, inspire each other with their unique styles and artistry. “Without the burden of audience expectations and while sharing within the safe haven of a musical ʻohana\, artists love to play the music that wells out of a deeper place of sharing and camaraderie.” \nLed Kaapana thrills and inspires audiences worldwide with his unmatched virtuosity in kihoʻalu\, ʻukulele\, and leo kie kie\, and he throws in an unexpected joke if he is so moved. His devoted fans from many corners of the world call themselves “LedHeads” and often show up wherever Led performs. Expect the unexpected with Led as every performance is spontaneous and fresh. He often jokes\, “I no rehearse!” He thrills audiences and when the audience thrills him\, he lets out his inimitable Ledward giggle. \nInspired and mentored by Led\, David Kamakahi has honed his craft as one of the outstanding ʻukulele players of this generation. He toured extensively with his father\, the late Reverand Dennis Kamakahi\, composer extraordinaire\, and now plays with the group Waipuna along with Kale Hannahs and Matt Sproat. We are fortunate to be able to have him share his ʻukulele virtuosity on Kauaʻi between two tours to Japan. Jamminʻ with such a revered circle of artists\, David is sure to “cut loose”! \nBobby Ingano\, undoubtedly THE master steel guitar artist in Hawaiʻi\, spends much time on tour with Taj Mahal\, but values any time he can spend time playing music on Kauaʻi. A lead artist in the Steel Guitar festivals staged on all the islands\, Bobby WOWʻs the audience when he “Sleepwalks” and plays any of his mesmerizing steel solos. Humble and quiet\, his music speaks volumes as kolohe Bobby adds delightful paʻani and unexpected steel sounds to enhance the music by other artists. Born in Lanai City\, Lanai\, Bobby credits his teachers for his musical guidance – grandparents\, aunts\, uncles and Feet Rogers. \nJeff Peterson is undoubtedly a master musician at the top of his game\, comfortable with audiences worldwide in a variety of musical genres. Peterson’s style fuses traditional Slack Key with elements of classical and jazz guitar. Born on the Island of Maui\, Jeff grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father\, a paniolo\, or Hawaiian cowboy\, on the Haleakala Ranch. The music that he heard from his father and other paniolos as well as the slack key on classic recordings by the Gabby Pahinui Band\, Leonard Kwan\, and Sonny Chillingworth made a deep and lasting impression on him that he continues to draw inspiration from today. He went on to study jazz and classical guitar at the University of Southern California and at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa; today he is one of the most sought after artists in Hawaiʻi. \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1. Valet parking at the porte-cochere; 2. Free event parking in the unpaved area beyond the covered parking stalls — get there by turning right at the first opportunity and then take a left into a dirt field; or 3. Enter the first gated area on your right\, a bit closer to the ballroom entrance than the dirt entrance\, and turn into that gated area. Press a button to make the gate rise\, collect a ticket issued by the machine and hold onto it. Get it validated just inside the ballroom door to receive a special validation for a $10 total parking fee. Use that ticket to exit the gate\, paying the balance due at a kiosk machine near the restrooms or at the gate with your credit card. \n

SUMMARY:E Kanikapila Kākou Week 4: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders”. Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff”
DESCRIPTION:E Kanikapila Kākou 2025 \nOUTRIGGER Kaua‘i Beach Resort and Spa \nTheme: “Music Heals” & “Hawaiian Music Traditions” \nMonday Nights – 6:00 – 8:30 pm\, through March 24; Doors open at 5:00 pm \nWeek 4\, February 24: “The Amazing Charlotte Apo with the Mokihana Serenaders” (Paul Ventura\, Pancho Graham\, Norman Kaawa Solomon\, Kilipaki Vaughan). Plus “Hot Kūpuna Strut Their Stuff” \nBorn in the fishing village of Miloliʻi on Hawaiʻi Island on May 29\, 1937\, Charlotte Apo grew up in a close-knit community where singing and playing Hawaiian songs was a basic lifestyle. Charlotte attended Kamehameha Schools from 1952 to 1955. She worked for Hawaiian Airlines playing music and also played music with Aunty Genoa Keawe. Music was a major part of her life. \nIn 2011\, at the age of 74\, Charlotte was clinically diagnosed with Alzheimerʻs. Her short-term memory is nearly non-existent\, but music and long-term memories related to music are fortunately intact. As long as she is prompted with her song titles\, Charlotte can draw from her encyclopedic memory banks of traditional Hawaiian songs and accompanies herself with her zesty ʻukulele strumming. Does she get tired? Not when she is accompanied by the Mokihana Serenaders\, a dynamite ensemble of Kauaʻi musicians including Pancho Graham on upright bass\, Kilipaki Vaughan on steel guitar\, and Norman Kaʻawa Solomon and Paul Ventura\, Charlotteʻs son\, on guitar. \nAdding to the fun and action for the evening\, kupuna are invited to get up and “strut their stuff” when they are so moved. It will be hard to keep the kupuna in their chairs with such rousing Hawaiian music. \nCharlotte and the Mokihana Serenaders are embarking on a new “career” playing on the set for the upcoming movie\, “Hawaiian Vacation” which will be released\, hopefully\, soon. \nʻUkulele Hour: Beverly Kauanui \nPurchase tickets at: http://EKK2025.eventbrite.com \nThe Garden Island Arts Council presents E Kanikapila Kakou 2025 as a Community Enrichment program made possible with funding support from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority (HTA) with support services from Kilohana at Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). \nEKK Special from Hotel: \nWe are so excited you are attending our EKK Concert Series! We value and care for our guests and what better way to enjoy the OUTRIGGER Way with an overnight stay. On behalf of EKK and OUTRIGGER Kauai Beach Resort & Spa\, here is a link to our special rates\, as this season is a busy one\, we recommend booking your reservations promptly. EKK Series Booking Link \nHotel Parking Options: Parking options at the OUTRIGGER Kaua`i Beach Resort include the following three choices: 1.

For sixteen years now\, E Pili Kākou I Ho`okahi Lāhui has been dedicated to this mission. Each year\, kumu hula and kupuna from throughout Hawai`i are invited to pass on their teachings to eager participants. These dedicated individuals are steadfast in ensuring that the art of hula will be perpetuated with great love and respect for the culture and its people. Each is highly reputable in hula training\, education\, experiences\, language and history and is inspired to share the spiritual essence of hula. They have been invited to participate in this retreat as a means of preserving and promoting Hawai`i’s cultural dance in a non-competitive and nurturing environment. This devotion to excellence from nā kumu hula\, na kupuna and various other Hawaiian cultural specialists\, shall provide each student with an opportunity to broaden their training\, thinking and understanding of hula in its entirety on both an individual and hālau level. Specialized classes in topics related to hula and the culture will be available for the non-dancer\, providing an opportunity to participate\, regardless of physical abilities or experience with hula. \nEach year the event honors a special individual who exemplifies the high standards and values we as practitioners continue to strive to emulate and achieve. In the past\, we have been blessed to honor Hawai’i’s treasures who have since passed on\, including Lovey Apana\, Malia Craver\, Genoa Keawe\, Rubelite Kawena Johnson\, Kapeka Chandler\, Mary Louise Kekuewa\, Ku’uleialoha Punua\, Joan Lindsey\, Mary Ann Lim\, George Holokai and Darrell ‘Ihi’ihilauākea Lupenui. Living treasures we’ve been blessed to honor and continue to cherish as supporters of E Pili Kākou are Pohai Souza\, Coline Aiu\, Kealoha Kalama\, Kawaikapuokalani Hewett\, Mae Kamamalu Klein\, Ed Collier\, Leimomi Ho and Ainsley Hlemanu. \nFrom keiki to kupuna\, “E Pili Kākou Ho`okahi Lāhui” Hula Retreat is sure to give all of its participants a wonderful\, positive experience upon which to reflect and grow. We hope you will come and partake of this “offering of hula” and allow its spirit to connect and “pili” each one of us. What better way to celebrate life and peace…Let’s truly “come together as one body of people”!
